I am thinking about giving Infrared ( IR ) Photography a try

I already own these Nikon lenses:

  1. 24-70 F/2.8
  2. 16-35 F/4
  3. 75-150 Series E F/3.5
  4. Zeiss ZF.1 100 F/2
  5. AF Nikkor 180 F/2.8 D

Does anybody have information regarding which of these lenses will work well with an IR converted body and which ones will be losers ( ie: prone to flare issues, etc )

Thanks,
Bob

I found the 16-35mm to be excellent with IR.

Just be sure try out your lenses and see if you like the results before thinking of buying anything.

Your lenses are fine...if you have a crop factor body, then the 16-85mm is a great lens too. However all the ones you mention do fine in IR. The 14-24mm F2.8 is a great lens for IR on a full-frame body.

MaxMax seems to do the best conversions...and if you want a full spectrum IR camera, I have a D200 ready to go with appropriate filters (Baader) - contact me off-list.

The folks over at Nikongear.com have an IR/UV section where some of the best people hang out and post their images (and do much gear talk). That is a great resource:

Here are some IR photos from Central Park, NYC:

I found the 50mm 1.8D works a treat. The Tokina 11-16mm has a hotspot. The 18-105 DX kit lens works reasonably well. I'm expecting a 75-150 Series E in the mail this week so could try it. I've got a 180 2.8 AF ED & 28mm 2.8 AI-S I could also try, they are recent arrivals not yet tested on my D70-IR.

Anyway, this is the 18-105 & some colourised infrared shots using the D70-IR (665nm filter)

And this is the 50mm 1.8D

I'll see if I can do a session with the D70IR soon with those other lenses, maybe on the weekend.

i've found that suitable lenses are body dependent. you have to choose a body and the search for a lens that works well under most of the conditions you shoot. lenses that come with very high recommendations from Bjorn's site have failed miserably on my Fuji IS-Pro and some that he thinks are junk work very well most of the time. i use the Nikkor 12-24 most of the time.

http://nikongear.com/live/index.php?/topic/33248-fs-d200-converted-to-ir/

is a very good deal for an IR converted camera...I prefer the deep IR (830nm) to the standard (715nm) because (a) skies are deeper black (water too - makes for better looking reflections); and (b) there is slight more detail in foliage...but (c) down side is that exposure time can be 1-2 stops more with a deep IR conversion vs. standard.
