Sometimes it work in my favor, sometimes it drives me nuts. Wide open, the curve is such that you can do some fun things in the corner thirds. The edges and corners can get quite sharp wide open when you focus for them, at least on crop - breaks my heart a bit.

Your samples look pretty good - not as different from my 5R as I'd been led to believe. Are these corrected for color shift?

nope, no corrections applied. color shift isn't too bad on the a7 (but is on the a7r).

I must be conflating A7/A7R performance - I had the G 28mm categorized as an APS-C only lens, based on the experiences I read. Good news to me, as I'd like to upgrade to an A7 or future FF body when I can afford it. I haven't noticed color shift on my 5R other than on white wall/tissue tests, though our white winters might get me to change my mind.

I was on my way to the Köpenick gefängnis (Koepenick Jail) when I met a policeman in the S-Bahn (commuter train), and after making a comment about the heat and his uniform to break the ice (it was about 37 degrees Celcius, which is about 2 million degrees Fahrenheit), I told him that I was off to jail... and then that it was Koepenick Jail, for a photo tour. In hindsight, that probably wasn't a great joke. He was a little stiff somewhere in all of that, but was eloquent enough in the end, full bonus points for him.

I was loosely considering making another comment on the way back, in case I should see another policeman, that I had just come out of jail, but the opportunity didn't arise...

I decided that given the contrasty light and the flawed behaviour of the A7, that I would bring my Nikon on this trip, which was probably a good decision all told, in spite of the weight. D800, ZF.2 21/2.8 @ f/2.8:

Expecting around 40 degrees centigrade in August. My "studio" at Fuji will be a no-go area - one of the hottest places in Japan actually...

So I'm at a cross roads... I am considering the FE 55 or the ZM 50 1.5. I'm currently using the Voigt 40 on my A7 and am loving the character of the lens and w/ a helicoid it's a piece of cake to take a great shot so focusing isn't a concern.

The question comes down to do I want optical perfection (the FE 55) or do I want the character of the 50 1.5..... the more and more I shoot the Voigt 40 the more and more I see myself gravitating to the ZM 50 1.5.

Opinions? Sorry I have no shots to contribute currently :P

Carsten, maybe it is easier to get away with joke like that to a police officer when it is 37 degrees now that Germany won the World Cup, i.e. don't try that joke in Brazil

Great photo from the cell, here is one that is kind of the opposite. ZE 50 Macro-Planar on the Sony A7r.

zephoto, I don't have any personal experience with either lens but I've seen some great photos with the ZM 50/1.5 in the Sony A7 image thread and given that I also have a Leica M9 that I could use it on I would prefer it of the two.

As you say.. The question comes down to do you want optical perfection (the FE 55) or do you want the character of the 50 1.5 ?

Have you ever compared the C/Y Distagon 28mm f/2.8 with the G 28mm? If so, thoughts? I've seen some discussion of it before, but mostly in general terms (what to expect from a Biogon on digital vs Distagon, etc).

Someone might want to jump on this deal...

Zeiss ZF.2 Distagon 35/1.4 (EX+) with caps and hood for $1272 @KEH

I was tooling around their new site, figuring things out, and I came across it. Oddly enough, I couldn't find it listed on the classic site.

nope, never compared. pictures i've seen on film make the g 28 look better, but on the a7 the c/y definitely has better corners.

Ack, you had to go and bring up the G45... Any thoughts on the G45 vs the C/Y Planar 50mm f/1.7? Other than ergonomics, that is.

the g45 is way better in sharpness and contrast (ok there is a limit to how much better a lens can be than the 50/1.7) with a little better bokeh (still sucks beyond 1.5 meters). basically from f/2 to f/8 the the g45 is a little more than a stop better than the c/y eg. the g45 is slightly better at f/4 than the c/y at f/5.6. also, the ergonomics of my g45 are better than those of any c/y lens (due to some custom modifications) .

another shot with it at f/2.2:

Hmm. I might watch for a good price on one of those, then.

I love my C/Y 50/1.7 from f/2.8 on, but it isn't great below that. I think the Nikkor 50/1.8 AI I inherited beats it in contrast and sharpness wide open, though I want to do a more careful test to confirm. I also like the C/Y's bokeh at f/2.8 and above, though it isn't great wide open.
