For those who switched from Canon to Nikon and used the 135L, is there an equivalent lense?

Does the 135 F2.0 DC perform similarly to the 135L?

Thanks.

Ron

No, it's not quite as good as the 135L. But still pretty good though.

I loved the 135L.

I've heard good things about the 135 DC, but I just refuse to pay ~$1400 for a lens that is due for an update. I'll gladly pay $1500-1800 for an updated model, in the meantime, my substitute is the Sigma 150mm f2.8. It's an excellent lens, razor sharp, accurate focus, nice bokeh, etc.

Skip the 135 and get the Nikon 180/2.8 instead, or the aforementioned Sigma 150/2.8.

The 135/2.0 DC is a specialised portrait lens. If you're going to use it for that purpose then the difference is minimal.
AF wise the Nikon is no match for the Canon.

It seems that some people don't understand that the Nikon is a Defocus Control (DC) lens. This lens was designed specifically for portrait work and is wonderful in that application. A DC lens is difficult to design and manufacture. The next 135mm f/2 that Nikon releases will most likely not be a portrait lens, and most definitely not be a DC lens. But when you want f/2 at 135mm the 135mm DC is the best Nikon option at this time.

Not sure how a 135 F2 lens could not be a portrait lens. I'm sure an updated lens with AF-S would get quite a bit of attention.

What I mean is that it will not be designed to be a portrait lens like the DC. Some lenses are designed for a specific purpose and the lens suffers in other applications. Lenses specifically designed for portrait work tend to have less contrast in their output and render skin in a more pleasing way than other lenses. When Nikon releases a new 135 f/2 it will be AF-S and it will most likely perform like a shorter version of the 200mm f/2. At a premium price of course. It will be high contrast, fast focusing, and most likely designed as a low light action lens. This would allow Nikon to keep the DC in the lineup as the specialty lens that it is, and introduce a new "general purpose" 135mm f/2.

I like both lenses for different reasons. They both produce stunning IQ. Sharpness seems to be a little better on the 135 f/2 DC but has mediocre chromatic aberration control compared to the Canon 135 f/2. The AF performance is also somewhat lacking on the Nikkor lens.

One photo above was shot with the 5D classic and 135 f/2, the other is shot with the D700 and 135 f/2 DC.

I know a few wedding/portrait photographers using the 135 DC, and all of them say to just leave the DC at 0. Some of them are pretty technical and understand how to use it, but just don't find any worthwhile benefit.

I'm scared to think how much I would pay for a new 135 f1.8 AF-S VRII.

The chromatic aberration correction in the Nikon Capture NX 2 software really makes this a non issue if you shoot RAW and use Capture NX 2 in your workflow. But it could be an issue for jpg shooters or people that use other software in their workflow.

The 135mm f/2 DC is my most used portrait lens. It has its flaws such as CA like others mentioned, but also, if shooting into the sun, it becomes almost useless at times since it gets way too much haze in the shots. I've compared shots to my friends 135mm f/2L and IMO the canon version is nicer. I picked mine up for around $800 off of ebay though so I can't complain.

If the lens actually worked as well as the Canon I would shell out 2g's.
My Canon 135L is one pretty epic lens.

Six years have passed since this was last posted, so I wanted to see if anyone had any new insights as to a 135L replacement in the Nikon camp.

Unfortunately, there isn't anything like it for Nikon. I just switched from Canon last summer and I really miss this lens. F/2, fast AF, no CA, beautiful compression and $1K new. I've been thinking about buying a 1DMk4 and using just the 135L and 85/1.8 lenses on it - great for live music and indoor sports.

Nope.

I got tired of waiting for Nikon or Sigma to come out with a modern 135mm f/2, so I bought a DX body to pair up with an 85mm, to which there are no shortage of great options.

The 85mm focal length works out to be ~128mm which is close enough. Plus you get more light at f/1.8 and f/1.4.

Although I gotta admit, I'm seriously considering the 105mm f/1.4 as my next major pick up.

I think the 105 f1,4 could be seen as a competitor, even if it is 30mm shorter.

Alternatively, the 70-200 f2,8, even at one stop slower, could be a valid alternative.

The 180 f2,8, even if it is a formidable lens under the right circumstances, also suffers from backlight. Also, the MfD can be a hindrance at times

I opted for the Zeiss 135 ZF.2 and haven't looked back.
One day when I'm too old to MF quickly, Sigma will release
an Art 135 f1.8 OS and all will be well with this world.
