Has anyone found (or fabricated) a decent substitute hood for the ET-120 that is normally paired with the Canon 300/2.8L IS? The original part is hard to find, and also quite an expensive accessory! So just wondering if there are any stories of potential substitutes or replacement ideas that have been successful.
A piece of stiff celluloid or synthetic cardboard could work tape to the suitable diameter. Since it would fold flat you would be free to extend it for real protection.
No aftermarket substitute of any sort that I am aware of.
However, you can jurry rig a shade out of just about anything....from corrugated cardboard to plastic sheathing.

I would bite the bullet and just buy the hood from Canon. The lens has less value without it.

The lens I got was a 'beater', so it was in rough shape already, but functioning perfectly, and hence a bargain. So a brand new hood could be about 1/5 of the value, which is a bit hard to swallow. Would be interested in finding a 'beater' hood too. I've seen some used ones run for about $200, so maybe I'll keep my eyes open for some.

Don't you mean 1/5 of the COST? The VALUE of the lens (even a "beater") and hood is a different matter.
Just because you got a bargain on the lens, don't restrict yourself unreasonably in expecting all the other bits of kit you use to also be bargains!
