p.1 #1 · Using Spyder3Print as Colorimeter(L*a*b*)?

Hi, all.

I have been using a colorimeter for measuring L*, a*,and b* values under C illumination. This colorimeter, very old model, 15 yesars or so,from Minolta CR200b, has broken a few days back. At this moment, they do not carry any spare parts or anything at all, since this is a too old model.

I think Spyder3 Print(or Studio?) has some mention of the colorimetry, expressing the data as L*, a*, and b* somewhere in their short description.
However, I have never used the Spyder3 at all.
If it has the capability similar to a portable colorimeter, it would be a good candidate for such job of color measurement.
Even though the Spyder3 might not meet the exact accuracy or precision of the high end colorimeter(with tricolor sensor) or repeatability of the resulting data, I would be happy if it provides somewhat similar range, considering the price seems to be around US$500. AFAIK, price of a decent brand-new colorimeter, similar to the one I had been using, may start from US$6,000 in my region at this moment.

Any suggestions or comments are welcome.

If this is not an adequate section of the forum, you may well move mine.

Thanks in advance,

sjyng

The Spyder3 Elite colorimeter is designed for monitor/projector calibration and measures transmissive light only. It operates via USB only and does not have it's own power source. It is very accurate and has a seven color detection engine for wide color gamut displays.

The DataColor Spectrocolorimeter that comes with the Spyder3 Print/Studio package uses a multicolored LED array to measure reflected light for printer patch targets. This device is also USB powered and requires a computer with the corresponding software to operate. It can take spot color readings recording LAB values.
