p.1 #1 · Legal Issues/Reuse Of Art?

About 10 years ago I went on a comic book buying binge (I worked at an auction web site and got the fever). I am now embarking on a photographic project to take these comics and turn them into artistic statements other than what they were initially meant for, altering them digitally...

Has anyone used existing art in new artistic endeavors? What--if any--legal ramifications might be encountered?

Any comments will be very helpful!

Be True,
Ed R.

Why not post the original (at a smaller size) so one might compare?

Do you have the artist name, and way to contact to ask permission? This would be a collaboration and not an original piece so permission and credit would be due to the source. (Legally and ethically.)

Depending on how transformative your work is as compared to the original comic books, and how widely you release it, you could run into a copyright infringement problem; probably not, but it's possible. Best advice is to contact the artists, discuss your project, and get permission.
