$300-500 is pretty much the average range. Guys who make your job easier by doing things without you having to ask are worth the $500, and sometimes more.

I pay $200 on the low end and $350 on the high end with a bump to $400 if its a really tough day. At $500 they better know more than I do.
That's for commercial work not weddings / portraits which are different

if you're just needing a studio/on location assistant and not some fancy tech then here is what i know from experience...
i worked for a guy for a little while and got $7/hour.
heck, he wouldn't even pay other assistants minimum wage.
that didn't last long. i would never ever pay someone that little for anything.
not even to take out my garbage.
there are some people out there that are just tightwads. no wonder their business is dying.
i believe though that if they are a beginner $10-$15/hour, as Jonathan said, is fair.
if they do great and stay with you, please don't be selfish - give 'em a raise. :P
oh, and if they are driving farther than normal for a shoot, pay their gas or at least a portion of it.
it sounds like i'm bitter, lol. but i'm really not. experiencing it all made me realize what i do and don't want to do in my own business.

I pay mine $10 per hour and provide transportation to and from the wedding/event. Second shooters get $100 per job. I tend to hire high school and college students who want to make some extra money and who won't start their own business and undercut me. They're good, hard workers who do an excellent job and don't let their egos get in the way of their work.

I assisted a few times, all for free except one time when working on corporate communications for large business spent time with their in-house photo team.
As I was already in a jounralism/corporate communications in my mid twenties and earning modest but proper pay I couldn't reall consider trying to assist with so many people trying to work for free. Plus, I had a nice sideline going with portrait work and product photography.

In the video production business I pay grips $300-$375 day in our market. (North Carolina) More if I'm shooting in larger markets like NYC. I pay gaffers $350-$450. I pay assistants $150-$200.
