Hi, I bought a d300 which should be in tomorrow! this understandably has left its mark on my funds haha, but I'm looking to buy a fast zoom lens. as of now I have a 18-80 and a 70-300 Tamron lenses, and I plan on picking up a 50mm 1.8 later this week
so I need a cheap high speed lens.

Bob Atkins had a good, detailed review of the Tamron and it seems like a pretty good lens. The Sigma 24-70 had generally been getting middling reviews.
I have tamron 28-75mm and a 17-50mm both 2.8. Both are great deals. not nikons but close and much less. Also better size and weight which i really like.
ok thanks guys! I've heard lots of good stuff about the Tamron 17-50
I've heard a few of the 3rd party lenses are tanks and getting a filter for them would be quite expensive for the 87mm.
looks like im going to have quite the extensive Tamron collection haha (only a 50 1.8 from nikon)
It entirely depends on what range you're going to be shooting most, but I'd suggest from that group that the one that would best suit mountain biking photography would be the Siggy 50-150 f2.8. It's a great lens, yet not huge or heavy like some of the slightly longer fast lenses tend to be, and it's pretty darn sharp, although not quite at its best wide open. AF performance is also very good. I haven't used the similar Tokina, but if Ray says it's good, it likely is.
I would bet you'd find all the others too short for MTB photos, and you'd miss the extra reach...
