I don't own a D3, but according to DPR, about the D700: A new (and very useful) option on the D700 is to superimpose the Virtual Horizon onto the Live View image.
It is maybe not possible with a D3?
Another reason to love Nikon's support of the professional camera's. D700 announced yesterday with that new virtual horizon feature, and the same day Nikon releases a firmware update for the D3 that has the same capability!
they needed too because the 1D3 which i own has had such a to say the least spotted history. the screams of anguish needed to be somewhat quieted. they threw a bone out in desperation. it took the D3 to force their hand. spinning 2 wheels to move a focus point is/was utterly rediculous. but then ahain how many years have they had it this way? as you said it took a year after its initial release for them to actually make the JS into something really useful.
having owned the 1Ds 1D2 1Ds2 XTi and the 40D and the 1D3. history says what i say is not rubbish and way closer to reality. it is the first time they ever really changed a control configuration on a product other then minor updates
yes it does seem they may have adapted a competitors methods somewhat but even then when the 1Ds3 came out it got the same treatment well after its initial release
to date that has been the biggest inline "upgrade" to 1Dx series model other then a intro of a new one.
