about the Alaska sea life center, the website says few things like octopus experience and other things, are they worth it, or the $20.00 admission is good enough?

Request advice on Anchorage on 05/31 for the time we have (we need to have lunch as well).

If i have missed anything please let me know. Just 5 more days!!!

Thanks a lot to everyone for the amazing advice.

Ashish

Hi Ashish,

Wow, again I complement you on your trip planning skills! I assume you are using The Milepost to get all of that detail? I’ll try to provide as much requested info as I can:

Campground request (neat, not crowded, safe, dont mind $$)
- Valdez campground RV
- Home campground RV

If you don’t have the Milepost, try to pick one up before you go. I looked at my 2007 copy and it lists all of the RV parks in Valdez and Homer. We’re not RV’ers, so I’ve never really looked for RV campgrounds or know their quality, but there are definitely a lot listed in the MP.

about the Alaska sea life center, the website says few things like octopus experience and other things, are they worth it, or the $20.00 admission is good enough?

Hard to say if it’s “Worth it”. As I mentioned before, we got in for free on “residents” day and I definitely enjoyed it, but I doubt I would pay to see it again. That being said, if you have kids they will definitely have fun! The “octopus experience” is just a small tank with an octopus in it that you stick your hand into. They also have others for starfish, anemones, etc. and lots of exhibits with fish, seals, birds, and a really HUGE Sea Lion! They are also supposed to have Otters, but I didn’t see them when I was there. Maybe I sound jaded or I was expecting more, I don’t know. But others I have talked to say this one is better than similar Sea Life Centers in places such as San Diego, Atlanta, etc.

Request advice on Anchorage on 05/31 for the time we have (we need to have lunch as well).

From your itinerary, it sounds like you have to drop off the RV at 11 am? Is it possible you could talk them into letting you have it for a few extra hours? If not, maybe get a shuttle from them to the airport and rent a minivan for a few hours? (I assume you will have lots of luggage with you). You could even check all of your bags while you’re there renting the car, getting that out of the way early. (BTW, what airline are you coming up on? Alaska Airlines just changed their checked bag policy to only on free bag – just like United. Lucky for you it doesn’t take effect until July 1)

Here’s a site that gives good street direction up to Glen Alps:

http://www.romancingalaska.com/southcentral/SC_glen_alps.htm

If you are coming directly from the RV place you take the New Seward Hwy south to O’Malley. From the airport you take Minnesota St South (then turns into O’Malley).

Since you’re headed up to Flattop, there is a burger joint (Wee-B’s) also on O’Malley just one block west on the other side of the New Seward Hwy. Also, there is an IHOP next to the Lowe’s (just another block further east at the comer on the other side of Old Seward Hwy) and a really good Thai place across from the Lowe’s (in the shopping center next to the Car Wash way back behind Wee-B’s).

Again, for dinner in Anchorage after you come back down the hill I would recommend Simon and Seaforts downtown on L Street. (907) 274-3502 Make reservations early (like today!) and ask for a table with a view.

Hope I’m not boring you with all of my suggestions, but you sound like someone (like me) who appreciates all of the information and detail you can get! Hopefully you will have some clear weather for photography. As I am writing this, today is one of those absolutely crystal clear days that remind us all why we live up here. But we’ve also been having rain, so come prepared for any kind of weather, including hot weather up in Fairbanks. Also, the trees are just now starting to turn green, so Spring should be in full swing by the time you get up here.

Enjoy your trip, I can definitely tell you are excited that the big day is approaching! We expect a full trip report upon your return!

Regards

Hi Ashish,

Couple of other things I forgot to mention:

I was looking at your profile and noticed you have a 17-55 and a 70-200. Any way you could get your hands on an ultra-wide before you come up? Here’s a shot at 10mm from one of the many turnouts along the Seward Hwy just south of Anchorage:

http://www.rpmachining.com/images/Turnagain.jpg

This was taken in March, the inlet is ice free now, but the mountains still have snow.

In addition to Spring and bug season, this time of year is also Road Construction season (since they can’t work on the roads during winter). Expect periodic delays and traffic snarls whenever you’re in a town, or even sometimes on a stretch of highway out in the middle of nowhere. In particular, be sure to ask at the RV place for directions out of Anchorage. They are starting a major highway construction/improvement project on the Glenn Hwy out of town and there may be some detours in place.

Also, since you'll be doing so much driving I should mention that for whatever reason, Alaska seems to have more than its fair share of bad drivers. Most folks up here are pretty courteous, but a few are real jerks. Particularly bad here in Anchorage and in the Mat-Su valley (Palmer, Wasilla, and Big Lake). Be extra careful when you see someone at a side street waiting to make a right turn. Often, they will pull out right in front of you without even looking giving you almost no time to brake. I don’t know why this happens so often up here, but it’s really a heart stopper when it happens in winter on an icy road! I always drive like I'm riding a motorcycle, expecting the worse at all times. Also watch for speed-traps, particularly in the construction areas where traffic fines are double. Just take it slow and you should be fine.

Amazing!,
EOS, I don’t know how to thank you for all the info you have given be. I will surely be there in the to wave my hands at your home, look out for me on the 31st between 1:00 and 3:00 . We r flying with continental, i guess 2 bag are allowed per person. Also regarding the lens, I am renting a 100-400mm for 9 days, which sets be back to about $210.00 for 9 days, and its the same cost for a 10-22 mm as well. Now considering the cost of a new 10-22, i may not be able to rent a wide angle lens, and its too late for me to purchase a new one, I will try my best with my 17-55. I will surely be posting photos on both landscape and wildlife forums.

Wish me luck.
