p.1 #3 · What would Nikon charge to fix a AFS lense?
This doesn't quite answer your question, but it might help.
I had my 17-35 fixed a few months ago at Kurt's Camera, an authorized repair shop here in San Diego. An internal screw had backed out and -- thanks to the stupid human who ignored the problem -- had damaged the lens barrel. They replaced the lens barrel and recalibrated the lens for $180. It's been great since.
They mentioned that parts for that lens are getting a little harder to find.

Thanks for all your responses....when I asked the question I didn't yet own it, but I do now and will know soon what and how much it will cost to fix, but apparently it work very well manually right now...so I'm guessing a new motor and parts and labor it could be as good as new....and the price made it worth looking into either way.

Josh,
I just read your post....I recently sent a 18-200mm (i know different lens) but it had the same problem....a local store told me that I would be better off sending it to Nikon to fix...I did...turns out the previous owner somehow broke a piece inside the lens that connected the AF drive to the lens....only cost me 185.00 to fix with cleaning and replacement of the front lens...when I got the detailed report back..the inside part was only 35.00...the replacement lens was 120.00..the rest was tax and shipping...sorry for the long story but I would say to send it off and see what Nikon has to say....once they look at it...if you get it a a good deal it might be worth fixing...like my 18-200mm, and then again it might not.....
