This is a repost of a shot I took a couple of years ago, but I recently went back and edited for pollen build-up on the beak. The shot was taken with the 20D + 400mm 5.6 + Kenko 36mm extension tube from about 6 feet away.
Let me know what you think http://www.pbase.com/image/97046722.jpg
I am also reminded by this shot how much I need to get myself an extension tube. I use the same body/lens setup as you and shoot this exact pose of this exact bird, only from the usual minimum distance of about 10 feet. The proximity here is real nice.
Composition-wise it's got a few distracting elements, but I do love the detail.
Excellent details...the branch in the front is kind of distracting, but one cannot always control that and to me getting the shot is much more important... well done.

Excellant image Jon! Are the colors that irradesent(spelling?) on the Anna?? Wonderful sharp, detailed..

No the colors are often very different unless you shoot in somewhat of an overcast condition. This brings out an entirely different color scenario.

Definitely has several comp issues, but I took what I could get. That was the direction of the light and the perch that he chose.

I hate that branch, but it is not really clonable.
