Well, I just sold my Nikon 35mm PC on paypal and guess what? Paypal now imposes a 21 day hold on the funds!!!! There are so many conditions to not have a hold, that unless you sell hundreds of items a week you're out of luck.
I now refuse to use paypal. Any other suggestions?

Google checkout is an alternative.
I've done plenty of transactions with Paypal and although the fees are high (really high when combined with Ebay fees) in my hundreds of selling and buying transactions I have never experienced a 21 day hold on funds. There is a specific reason or glitch for this as this is not the norm. Even a refund only takes 5 business days. Is the other party filing a complaint? This would be a reason for the funds being on hold and not a fault of Paypal but rather the buyer. I'm no fan of Paypal but I've never had a 21 day hold and I've done far more transactions but not hundreds per week (a couple per month). There is no requirement for hundreds of sales per week in order to get your money right away.
As Xof711 indicates, get verified, it's a simple process. I did years ago but I if I remember correctly it is only adding a bank to your account. Which you'll want to do anyway so you can deposit the money to your bank account.

You have been an eBay member for less than 6 months, and you sell an item for more than $100, or
You have an eBay feedback score of less than 100, and you sell an item for more than $100, or
You have a Buyer dissatisfaction percentage** 5% or greater than 5%, or
You have an average Detailed Seller Rating (DSR) of less than 4.5, or
You have received fewer than 20 Detailed Seller Ratings in the last 12 months, or
You are listing your item in a high-risk category such as gift certificates, video games, cell phones, computers or consumer electronics.
Crap! I have 37 transactions, with 100% + feedback and it's still not enought for them....

It's a new policy only for ebay transactions. If you have over 100 feedbacks I guess ytou are exempt IF you have enough extended evaluations!

Ouch, thanks for the clarification. Wow, you're right, my apologies, I agree, that sucks!
I wonder if this will be a good way to keep scammers to a minimum knowing they can't get rich quick. Before they could make a fake sale and then run with their money even if Ebay/Paypal closed their account. Now Ebay which owns Paypal can seize the funds and return to victim. I see this policy as good and bad. I think 100 is excessive. They should make it something like 20 positive feedbacks as a seller.

Ouch, thanks for the clarification. Wow, you're right, my apologies, I agree, that sucks!

It doesn't help - all the scammers set up a few accounts and sell $1 items back and forth to between them to build up 100 sales each with a couple of >$100 for good measure then go for broke selling 1DsIII's and Hassy H3D-39 cameras. They aren't dumb - they read the rules and game them. That's what they do. If they only could apply that to a real job they would probably succeed. I'll leave it up to the reader to determine why they don't.

Ebay and Paypal are annoying. I had this same story with the whole lot of drum stuff I sold 3 weeks ago. Right now my funds are on hold while the customer looks through it and either 21 days on hold or positive feedback. In October, I hear Ebay is going Paypal only and will discourage all cash/check transcations. I am fed up with the fees with Ebay and fed up with this new policy. If I have to wait that long before I get my money, Google gets my business for now on and I wouldn't bother with Paypal/Ebay anymore. Its disgusting how things have changed but oh well. Money and profits will do that to any corporation.

Oh WOW! Didn't know that!! Well... As pointed out, Google is an alternative and it's the only real alternative ah!

Google Checkout isn't much better. I tried them a couple times for a few high price items and they turned down the transactions during their review process. Their fraud detection system is flawed, overly-sensitive. Maybe others have had better success but if you google Google Checkout you'll find many stories about their fraud protection being overly sensitive. It's fine for items that under a couple hundred dollars but they have not built up the audience of Ebay therefore selling strictly via Google isn't going to work very well.
I would prefer check or cash sales too but what happens is that a competitor who is selling something similar will outbid everyone with a dummy account and then never pay as their own items sells to a legit buyer. And as we know the number of people who don't send in money right away or never gets to be a hassle too.
I think we're all stuck for a while! That's why FM B&S board is so good, less hassles, few scammers if any.

The last time I used Paypal, I rec'd. the same message, but they did not hold my funds. I had 39 transactions and 100%+ feedback. Are you sure they are holding the funds or is that just the message you rec'd? I am verified and the funds go directly to my bank account (not sure that makes any difference).

There's been much written about how eBay is moving away from auctions in favor of fixed-price sales and how the strategy of the site will be to support large retailers and not individuals selling stuff, which I personally think is a big mistake. If I'm buying, I'm looking for bargains and I'm not getting bargains from big retailers, I'm getting bargains from individual sellers who either don't know the worth or who need the cash or who ran an auction and not enough people bid up the price.
On the other hand, almost everything I ever put up on eBay (which isn't all that much) sold. I've recently tried to sell camera equipment on Craigslist and it was a disaster. I constantly either got people who offered less than half what I wanted or who wanted the equipment, but had some inquiry (Does it have a high click count? Do you have a receipt? Does it have the original packaging? Was it ever cleaned by Nikon?) and when I responded in a positive way (low click count, yes to receipt, yes to packaging, yes to cleaned by Nikon), still didn't buy the camera. This happened numerous times. So on eBay, I think you get real buyers, on Craigslist, my experience is that you get tire kickers.

PayPal will release the hold when the earliest of the following occurs: the buyer leaves positive feedback; 3 days after confirmed item delivery; or 21 days without a dispute, claim, chargeback, or reversal filed on that transaction. (PayPal said if a buyer leaves a negative feedback but does not initiate a dispute, PayPal would release the funds to the seller after 21 days.)

Soory to hear that but that's just how it is...I had sold stuff too and the restrictions didn't apply to me cuz my feedback was beyond 50 . But darn, I love Ebay too much ...it's too expensive here in NZ...
