p.1 #1 · Monotone Palmetto(Multitone added)

Well yesterday was one of those stormy days that could end with a spectacular sunset. And it was, but I stopped about 10 miles too soon. The sliver I saw was the most intense reds and oranges. Oh well, win some lose some.

This is in a marl prairie, where muhly grass is more abundant over saw-grass. Luckily so, I thought my shoes were in the back of the Jeep but they weren't so I went trekking in flip-flops.

I seem to be addicted to sunsets, so if I don't get color, to bw it goes.

Thanks for looking,
Paul

Paul
Great comp. Splendid DoF on this one. Your explanation makes me want to see the color version. Well done.

This works really well. You managed to keep a good separation in tones of the palm trees against the background.

Hello Paul,

Fine contrasts and gradients and excellent mid-tones. Good work on the conversion, and, of course, I'd like to see the color version too .

Copy all the above!
Terrific conversion, Paul. Perfect pespective and comp, as well, to isolate the beautifully lit palmettos in lovely contrast with the gloomy sky! Very nice!

Hey Paul,

Great work here! Good work on going to B&W when the color didn't pan out. You certainly have some great tones to work with on this one.

Love the stormy sky and the "graphical elements" in the foreground. However, I'd really like to see the colored one.

B & W works well here Paul as does the foreground interest.

Wow, thanks guys. I may not have been clear, I didn't get any color in this shot, but I could see a sliver of it and man was it intense. If I had driven another 10 miles or so I think that sliver would have been a nice sky.

Anyways, you all want color, so here it is. I will admit it has grown on me. Maybe because I "reversed engineered" it from my bw file so the contrast was way up. Let me know if it is still too punchy.

Thanks again for all the comments,
Paul

Both spectacular...well done Paul! And great comp too...I like the way you've kept the palmetto's below the distant grass/tree line. Like them both!

Both are very good images, Paul. The color version gets the nod; however, you composed the photo very nicely. Two very good photos!

Thanks for the latest comments guys.

Mike, its actually South Florida. In the glades.

Thanks Chris. It was a tough comp. because of the lone palm on the left edge. Curious if it bothers anyone.

The color version is definitely growing even more on me.

Thanks again,
Paul

I think this is great Paul. I make sure to check out your work when I see a new post on here and this is why. It's a really simple shot, but the colors really pop in the added version. I think it really makes the palms stand out as the subject, whereas in the BW they seem to blend right in. I like the conversion and admit my first love is B&W photography, but this should be in color in my opinion.

Well done here.

The color version has what the B&W was missing - I like it a lot more. The greens and intense blues are great, punch is good (IMO). As tgrando said - in the B&W the palms were lost in a sea of similar tones, in the color the pop right out.
