p.1 #1 · Saw-whet Owl

Found this owl during our Christmas Bird count on 19th of dec. Unfortunately I did not have my camera. Couldn't locate it again inspite of exploring the area several times until today.

Great shots, especially number 1! Nikon ought to abondon that boring motorcycle ad and buy this shot for advertising the D3!

What big eyes you have!! Great detail in #1. You can even see the feather serrations around the primary feathers that help the owls reduce turbulance making them silent and successful birds of prey. Nice catch.

Thanks Susan. These owls are usually hidden among the cedar branches. I was lucky to get a less cluttered background.

Thanks Burt

I was quite suprised to see the iso 5000 shot when I came home.I had the camera set up for high ISO noise reduction to normal. In the nikon software I set the NR to none during PP. That brought lots of details without too much additional noise.
