p.1 #1 · Need Advice on Purchase (Mamiya M645 1000s)

Hello.

I am sick of shooting only digital and want to purchase a medium format camera of some sort...but do not know anything about them really. My boss over the summer has a Hasselblad that he let me take a few shots with and it was amazing! I was looking at the Mamiya M645 1000s (for around $300)...but did not know if that is a good price or not. If anyone has any advice on a good starter camera that would be awesome. My limit is from $200-250. Thanks.

Jason

You're going to be hard pressed to find a MF rig for under 300.... i'd say about 400 is the price point for a solid body, lens and back setup... something like the bronica SQa or SQai. make sure to budget for developing, scanning, etc... a roll of film after all is said and done can easily hit $40.

Check out the Pentax 6x7 cameras with a 105mm lens. You might be able to pick up a setup for about $300 if you look hard. These are tanks and don't be afraid to pick one up with some brassing. Make sure it has the mirror lock up feature as the mirror in these is huge.

I recommend the Fuji GW670II, see Dante Stella's Fuji MF rangefinders.
