p.1 #1 · EF-S 17-55G f/2.8 IS USM - Yes or No?

I eagerly awaited this lens and had hopes up high that it would be f/2.8. Well, it is and with IS to boot. This is my dream lens, but from what I've seen in the various threads are surprisingly a lot of negative reactions, at least more than I expected. I think the range, aperture and IS make it a killer combo. Yes it is pricey, but nothing out of the ordinary considering the aperture, "L" lens elements and IS. What is your opinion on this new "G" EF-S?

Where are you all getting the 'G' from? the lens in this pic http://www2.photim.com/info/img.php?N=1133 says around the ring "EF-S 17-55mm 1:2.8 IS USM"
No G that I can see

A lot of the negativity comes from full frame elitists who think everything EF-S is second rate and should have its prices immediately slashed by one half as a means of validating their perceived 35mm dominance.

People who are out taking pictures daily and not trolling on DPreview where most of the negativity is taking place will LOVE the lens.

I know it's still a bit of a mystery what it exactly stands for, but I first saw it over at dpreview:

above the specs and in the URL as well i see

i think most people are disappointed because it is a "crop" lens that costs "too" much, or maybe it is "too" close to the godly 24-70L. so you are paying A LOT of money for a lens that you cannot move to FF or 1.3x. that is the argument. but really, there is no FF equivalent that i know of for this lens. it just depends if you see yourself moving from a 20D to a 5D or something, i guess.

personally, based on specifications only, i think it is a brilliant lens, perfect for people like me who shoot mostly indoors but hate using any sort of flash. the high ISO performance of the 20D (or 30D now?) is great, the F/2,8 is quite bright, and the "3 stop IS", which is something I miss using olympus cameras. imagine what kind of darkness you'd need for ISO 3200, F/2,8, and using the full 3 stops of IS. pretty amazing, i think.

considering how much the olympus 14-35mm (28-70 equiv.) F/2 will be when it comes out, i think this lens may be a BARGAIN. yes, the 14-35mm will be pro-build and F/2, and did i mention pro-build? but it will not have IS, it has less reach and it will cost at least $400 more, if not more.

that's just how i see it though. 'cause i really think this is a nice lens.

i am definitely still staying with olympus though no matter how much it will cost

I think it's a useful focal length range and aperture, and the IS is the icing on the cake.

However, I've got a lot of 'honey-dos' ahead of me before I can afford one.

The specs are really nice, but $1200 is just too high

If I had the extra cash, I would buy this lens in an instant but c'mon! No hood for a lens that breaches the four figure barrier? Get real Canon....

Going on Canon's previous lenses: it's not an L therefore it doesn't have the hood included. Simple!

I suspect the 'G' was just a typo on Phil's part: it's a moniker more at home in a Nikon lens name than a Canon one. It doesn't appear in the Canon press release...

everyone is bitching because its an EF-S mount lens. If it is anything but an L lens you can count on plenty of whining, and there already seems to be plenty of that with the new 85mm 1.2 L II. Hope this new 17-55mm F2.8 lens turns out to be a good one, I might have to take a look at one should I choose a 20D or 30D when I pick up a new camera in a couple months.

What would you do if the expected price drop would make it a high three figure price?

Frankly, I don't care if the lens is an L or not but if I have to pay over four figures for it, it should at least come with a hood. Am I wrong? Sigma includes hoods with their cheapest lenses and quality bags for their higher-end. Am I out of line to expect a hood for this lens?

Still, I think the lens commands enough money to warrant a hood to come with it. As does the 10-22.

At least to me, the new Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4.5, 1:2.3 macro (http://www.sigma-photo.co.jp/english/lens/digital/17_70_28_45.htm) is still looking better than this. Personnally, IS on this focal range is rarely going to be needed (especially with the max apeture) and only compounds the cost of this non-L monster with its L-level price tag...

It will be interesting to see the reviews though!

Lots of jealousy i'd imagine is why the negative reaction. Folks who have the FF bodies or 1.3 bods want one of their own. It is quite apparently aimed at the Nikon 17-55, and the addition of IS is sweet. However, if it's like the other Canon ef-s lenses, build quality will be so-so at best. For similar money you can have the 24-105/4 IS which seems to be a much more versatile lens. And that also includes a hood The Nikon 17-55 is quite a lens, and built like a tank. Maybe this one will be solid? But I doubt it...

No hood or weather sealing... Nikon is looking more interesting all the time...

Good thing I like what I've already got. Looks to me like Canon's latest releases have re-defined the notion of 'gouging the customer.'

Just cut a hole in the bottom of a coffee cup and you have a hood. That's all I would be able to afford if I got that lens.

For me, this is exactly what I was looking for. I’ve been contemplating something to serve as a “wide-std walk-around” (if there is such a thing) to fill in between my EF-S 10-22 (which I consider an “ultra-wide zoom”) and my EF 24-105L (a “std-tele walk-around” on the 1.6 crop). Up until now, I’ve been vacillating between the 17-40L and the 16-35L. This new lens nails it perfectly right in the middle in terms of specs and price! It’s got the 2.8 (and IS) that the 17-40 at f/4 doesn’t have but the longer reach (and lower price) that the 16-35 f/2.8 lacks. One just needs to get over the L snobbery to appreciate this EF-S lenses for what it will be! However, after the last release/recall fiasco of the first batch of 24-105 L’s, I’ll have to wait on the first set of serious tests before I run out and buy one!

Full Frame Elitists! There's always something to laugh at on FM.
