Looks like I have to dig out my manual for this program again . After hearing Jack and John's comments regarding the latest NC version, I upgraded. I must say, I think Nikon has radically improved this version in terms of speed! I am using the D-Lighting feature in a couple of tests of the new version, and it's gone from 30 seconds to 2 minutes for processing down to a second or two! That's quite an improvement, so I'm going to continue using NC for a while. I've maintained that the manufacturer's program is likely to be better in terms of actually dealing with its own files, but NC was so terribly slow for me that it made no sense to actually use it when ACR was getting the job done for me. This is all changed now, so I'll revert back to NC for a bit and see how things go. Thanks guys
Nikon PictureProject and Capture 4.4 Software
The D200 will include a complimentary copy of Nikon’s PictureProject software, a $49.95 value, and an easy-to-use yet powerful software application that provides image transfer, organization, editing, and design functions for JPEG and NEF (RAW) images produced with the camera. PictureProject can also convert NEF (RAW) files to JPEG or TIFF format finished files, as well as save in the original NEF file format. PictureProject is an essential accessory and is compatible with the new D200 and all prior Nikon digital SLR models and Coolpix Models. The D200 is also compatible with Nikon Capture 4.4 software (sold separately), a new version of Capture that has the specifications to open NEF files from the D200 and all other Nikon digital SLR models. This newest version features greatly enhanced NEF (RAW) processing capabilities as well as Nikon Capture Camera Control that allows remote camera operation when connected to a computer via the included USB cable or wirelessly using the new Wireless Transmitter WT-3 (sold separately). This versatility is especially useful when photographers may need to continue shooting with their D200 while simultaneously having someone else edit incoming images.
Version 4.4 of Nikon Capture software offers a flexible, stable and creative workflow approach for any photographer in both
professional and personal use through Nikon’s unique approach referred to as the "Camera to NEF to Capture Dynamic Link"performance. Newly added features for Capture include automatic highlight recovery when using Exposure Compensation at values lower than 0 EV and Black and White conversion support in Tone Compensation
Talk about being out of the loop in keeping NC upgraded. I just looked, and I’m running 4.1.0. I don’t see any info on the Nikon site about updating 4.1.0, but looking a little deeper, it looks like I can use the 4.2.1 full to upgrade my 4.1.0. The Nikon site is a little vague about this, but has anyone done this, and will this load as a demo, or will it see the full licensed version of 4.1.0 on my computer, and upgrade it, then allowing me to upgrade to 4.3.1 then to 4.3.2?
don't really use NC4.3.2 - although I have it. I much prefer CS... I just like that workflow better for some reason, I can import the RAW and start working on it right away.

I've been doing the updates/upgrades as they come along and but don't remember anything out of the ordinary.
From Nikon Canada: Nikon Capture 4.3.1 or later must be installed before proceeding with this upgrade. If you are using an earlier version of Nikon Capture 4, please update to version 4.2 and then 4.3.1 before proceeding with this update. If Nikon Capture version 4.3.2 is to be used in combination with Nikon View, please be sure that you are using Nikon View version 6.2.0 or later for full compatibility of latest functions.
It doesn't load as a demo and the installer should see your licenced version.
Awww nuts. OK, I take it back. One of the things I really dislike about NC is that it doesn't have nearly as nice a preview window as ACR. I get really small thumbnails that are not adjustable in size. After using it for the past week, I must admit I don't find I can work with it nearly as well as I do ACR in all honesty. I get too much a "digital" look in NC, and while there's greater flexibility in adding saturation in NC, I don't find the end results to be as pleasing as what I get in ACR. I'm certain there are folks who find NC very much better than ACR, so I guess this is one of those things that some folks like it hot, some like it cold . Back to ACR .
Not sure what the issue is with small thumbnails in NC. If you're in multi-edit mode where you have thumbnails across the top the size is adjustable. Not trying to argue with you, I'm just not sure what issue you're having with the image size.
Nikon View makes it easy to adjust the image sizes , do not have the issues you do. For me ACR is softer, the contrast never is right, the color is never the same, the details are muddy, it just does not at all deliever the goods for me like NC does. But I took the time to really get to know them both . I use ACR for proofing for a job , and I use NC for the keepers
Blast, you guys are giving me whiplash ! Actually, let me ammend that - I'M giving me whiplash.
I still find the thumbnails to be much more adjustable (and much larger) in ACR (unless there's something I'm missing - very possible), and I still find NC slow. HOWEVER, I must admit, it now does a nicer job on the processing. OK, time to read the manual again from cover to cover and get this sorted out. Thanks for the feedback guys. Much appreciated as always.
