Is there a software utility that can determine that?
Yes there is. You need to get an EXIF reader. Many are available for free for PCs and Macs. However, not all include all the information, like shutter actuations.
First of all, Opanda will only show the shutter clicks on the original unprocessed image .(on my version anyway)
Scroll down to where it reads : total number of shutter releases for camera.
Voila!

I downloaded IEXF 2.25 and it doesn't give any indication of actual shutter activations anywhere. even tried running the camera connected to the 'puter.. no joy there iether

Just got the OPANDA one, but it doesn't show the shutter actuations at all.. I"m stumped...

Is anyone certain Opanda shows the shutter count of a D100 file? Looking at a D70 file I can see the shutter count but not from a Coolpix 8400 file. Perhaps it's not there.
