Hello all,
I need some input on the 300 af-i 2.8 vs the 1st generation af-s 300 2.8. I'm looking at both in the used market and want to know how much faster the af-s is than the af-i. I currently use the old af-300 f4 and want a faster lens.
Thanks in advance for any help.

The AFS-1 is a lot faster and a lot more positive than the AFI. Both are excellent optically, in fact I think both are better than the AFS-II from an optical standpoint. I would get the AFS-1 if you are shooting action. It will be worth the money for sure.
I can not comment 1st hand on the 300mm AFi, but can comment on the 500mm AFi. I've rented the 500mm AFs and had an opportunity to own the AFi version of the lens. I've never looked back. It provides a great tool for both landscape (odd I know), and bird photography. I've paired it with both my 1.4 and 2.0 extenders, with excelent and very good results, respectively. My sugestion is to try it out and see if the exeperience and results you get are worth the extra $$ for the newer model.
