p.1 #1 · What should I do?

I may be buying my first Nikon tomorrow or the next day. I am getting a used D2H, but everything after that is getting blurry. I am considering 4 different kits.

D2H
D70 w/ 18-70
Tamron 75-300
Tamron 28-75

D2H
Nikon 18-70
Tamron 75-300
Tamron 28-75

D2H
Nikon 17-55

D2H
Sigma 12-24
Tamron 28-75
Tamron 75-300

I will be getting a Nikon 80-200 as soon as I find one used locally, no matter what kit I get. And I will also be getting some primes and other basics a piece at a time.

I will be shooting Football, Basketball, and other sports, as well as general Photojournalism for my Universities paper. I am driving myself crazy with trying to decide, so any help will be great.

Cheers

D2H with 17-55. Great choice, you won't regret getting the lens. Have you given any thought about a flash yet?

It will be the SB-800, unless I get the D70 and then I will get the SB-600.

I use the SB800 on my D70 and it is fully compatible, works great!

Another vote for the...

D2H
17-55mm

...since you will be getting the Nikkor 80-200mm soon.

Those two zooms and a fast prime(s) would make an excellent kit. The faster zooms will help you in your listed jobs.

If you need a lightweight zoom to reach 300mm... get the Nikkor 70-300mm ED instead of the Tamron.

Its a money issue, not compatibility.

The Nikon and Tamron are identical, but the Tamron is not a push pull zoom. I don't like push pull.

The Nikkor 70-300mm is not a push pull either. Plus the Nikkor has better optics in my opinion.

The most important thing is the glass, everything else is secondary. The SB600 will work just as well.

I am also thinking that having the D70 will save me, if the meter fails.

... yea... been there... doing that right now (D2H meter failure).

It never hurts to have a backup.

No problem. I know because I had a 70-300mm ED lens for quite a while... and sometimes miss it. It wasn't a perfect lens by a long shot... but it was the best in that class. Of course... you don't need one if you are getting the Nikkor 80-200mm. The only advantage it would have is a little extra reach and lighter weight... but the 80-200mm has it beat in speed and sharpness.

I also figure I need the 80-200 more so I will be getting it, and the 17-55 can come latter as I don't specifically need it as much ( although I really want it ).

It is cheap and gives me that little extra reach that might mean I get the shot that the 80-200 won't reach

Buy Nikon glass !!! Do not disgrace a D2H with stigma or other subpar optics. Put a Nikon on your Nikon

D2H, 17-55!

The 17-55 F2.8 is an outstanding lens for a zoom, and fast, well worth having

The "H" & the 17-55 no contest here!!! This combo is the bomb. Yes I am a Nikkor Glass Snob. You will not regret this tight little package and you sould have the 17-55 for the rest of your shooting life,

Yes but do I need this lens now? I will be getting the 17-55 eventually, but it is hard to justify such an expensive lens, when I don't have a direct and immediate need for it.

Cheers
