Be sure not to have a subject facing out of frame. It rarely works. If the subject is facing left (our left), put them at the right side of the frame, otherwise you're left with us wondering if we're supposed to be looking at a person in a bright coat in the background.
Even if there were nothing in the background, it's still something to avoid. Overall, the image is a little too dark and over-sharpened. He certainly offers some great shots with his unique look and I hope this helps you.
I like this image better than the color one. You should post them in the same post because you are going to get lots of feedback on each and they are relative to each other.
Similar to CWBaker - I would leave space where he is looking and crop most of right. The man behind is distracting.
Its hard to take a picture of someone who is half shaded - the contrast are too great.
