This Drive-In is one of three left (that I know of) in the United States, and still under the original family ownership. They still do a thriving business in the face of the 2 multiplexes and a double theatre downtown. $6 per adult, $4 per child under 12. You can bring in whatever you want, coolers and lawnchairs are expected and welcomed. It is the custom though to plan to buy snacks to balance out what the family didn't charge the guest for admission.
Even if they do use the same butter-flavored transfat gook at the multiplex, I don't care. The popcorn at the drive-in is WAY better. (Is it possible to choke on nostalgia?)
This photo is retro in process as well. Shot on film, with one of my flea market folders. I left the grainy messy bits in there because I think they add to the nostalgia thing I've got going on for the drive-in. Processing is Kitchen Cupboard Caffeinol C, hence the color scan and brown caste. I've got one more roll of film I need finish shooting, so this might be a placeholder. The other camera I took out for this has a much wider lens so I'm curious to see what I've got there as well.
Thanks for the look, comments and critique most appreciated.
Wonderful shot. As soon as I saw the image, I flashed back to my childhood. It's a shame that my kids aren't growing up with the drive-in theater as a typical part of their childhood experience.
Then again, I guess that's one less thing for me to worry about when my daughter starts dating.
Frank- Thanks very much for the comment! Either caffeinol is twitchy or I got caught by film the previous owner left on a dashboard in 110 degree heat. The other roll I shot this week fogged horribly. Usually I like the unpredictable factor with old film. This time, not so much. Ah well, more film to use for "distress" experiments.
Klaus- Thanks for the comment! Four screens? Wow, that one must take up a bit of real estate.
Alex-Thanks! My daughter's older brothers will be acting as chaperones... whether or not they want to. I'm going to drag them back from college when that time comes.
Carrol and Beverly- Thanks very much! When I saw the topic, I knew I had to submit something on film.
Yes I do! This drive-in still uses them. The cutest cartoon starts out with a hotdog doing backflips and ends up with a chorus line of hot dog, hamburger, french fries and a fizzy soda. They also run the old "it's the real thing" Coke ads from the 70's.
