p.1 #1 · Letchworth, Lower Falls

This was a falls that I had photographed some 20 yrs earlier. Always wanting to return the opportunity came this past week. I arrived after a long day visiting and hiking other locations to find the light very harsh and side lit. After setting up in what I felt was a good perspective and getting a few test shots off I waited for the light to change. What I was presented with was a pleasant scene with enough light coming in to add interest in the background.

I do like it. IMHO I would also try a crop just below line of lite trees at the top and a little fill light on the big rocks where th river flows through the gap to how that would look.

Jimmy, I can see why one would want to return and shoot the waterfall. Looks like a great subject and you handled the contrast well with just a polarizing filter. I would suggest possilbly the next time you shoot a scene like this you might consider using a GND filter so you could bring out a little more of the detail in the foreground. Or bracket several exposures and blend them in PS.

I had thought of the GND filter and even pulled it out to take a look, I did do some selective levels&curves to bring out detail in the foreground rock and this is very close to what my eye's saw, the rock is naturally dark and with it wet from the waterfall mist it appears darker, I feel it also helps to keep the focus on the subject. Your right though there is a little more detail to be had there.

Having said this, I did bracket 6 exposure's with the intend of doing some HDR and also trying some layer blending. This scene will be a work in progress as I feel it has more potential.

Nice capture I like the fall color highlights on trees and a normal ss rendering of falls. Like prev comments a little cropping at the top & shadow recovery will be nice. BTW did you use active D lighting on this shot?

Very nice, Jimmy. I can see why you like the place. I love the light on the trees above the falls. I'd be tempted to only crop out all hints of the sky, say just above the darker pine in the upper right. The fg looks good to me, but I can also see the possibilities of a blend.

I've been to Letchworth countless times, I live about 45 minutes away

Another cool place to photograph that isn't too far away from Letchworth is Stony Brooke Park, down south of Dansville off of the 390 expressway and right on Rt. 36. I was there yesterday and shot a bunch, there are a ton of great little water falls in a small area.

Note that this was just shot this week so the colours are spring

I did not use Active D lighting I prefer to shoot pretty much standard and do what needs to be done PP. As I get a better feel for the camera I may start tweaking things.
