I think I can get by for half the price for a while. I need something, so 24-85 3.5-4.5, sb600 since I can't have 2.8, and a 50 1.8. I think these will all suffice until I can afford another 28-70 2.8. Any reason I shouldn't go with these, or should pick a different kit to get by for now...
Well what do you shoot? Why did you get rid of the 2.8?
You'll just lose money by buying something to get by in the mean time.
If you want advice you need to give is more info. A used 24-85 is a pretty dang good lens, probably the best cheap substitute for a 28-70 2.8, unless you can get by with less range with a 35-70 2.8.

The 24-85 is an excellent lens. They go for around $225 on the used market. The kit lens is also a good lens. Many people compare these two lens as "equals" in terms of pic quality. However, (for my copies) I think my 24-85 is the slightly better lens in terms of sharpness and contrast.
The 28-70 is heavy but there is no substitute for mass and quality and also Speed.
This lens has no peers really , i stands alone . I like my 24-85 a lot and it is close second, but the big honking zoomer she is something else

I've got too much mass to carry around I really like the wide end of the 24-85, it would be untouchable if it were f/2.8. I've really enjoyed this lens for portrait work too.

I have the 24-85 D f2.8-4 Macro. Love this lens, and KEH has a supply of used ones between 300-400 dollars (No affiliation, just bought stuff from and got great service). I find this lens a fast focuser and sharp (see Bjorn's site for a review).
Also the Macro really works with this lens making it versitle:
