p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Leica Summicron R 2/50 Question

Hi,

I'm using a Leica Summicron R 2/50:

with a 7D and would like to use a fader ND filter though I'm having problems identifying the thread size. It says on that link 'Filter Size - Series 6'. Does anyone know what that is or the filter size of this lens is in mm and if I can buy step up rings for it?

Thanks

I think Series 6 is a 41mm filter (Retaining ring is 45mm on the outer rim). I measured the filter I have on my Leica 50mm f2.0 R using just a ruler.

The UV flavor if this filter I have on my lens says UVa SERIE VI and has no threads. However, the filter drops in and retaining ring 14160 Series VI is what threads on to the filter threads on the 50R.

So one would have to find a series 6 ND and the retaining ring 14160 in order to use it on my version which may be the second. I think this lens is now on it's 3rd version and the threads are different. eBay has several of these Series 6 filters listed as does B&H.

Wonderful lens BTW.

I'm a bit confused now. i read on this forum:

http://graflex.org/helpboard/viewtopic.php?t=1891&start=0&sid=203f948e621881125e15b9b70661dac9 (about half way down by Henry)

that series VI thread is 44mm. According to the serial numbers in the link on my OP mine is from 1968. Is your lens the same as mine?

there are 2 different physical summicron 50s . the original one (with the series 6 filter size, from the 1960s), and the second version with a 55 mm filter size (from 1976). Both lenses are supposed to be great (I only have the later one); the first one is supposed to weigh a lot (no personal experience with it).
It may be possible to use a 45 mm filter on the lens (be careful). You could try the Lee filters or Cokin (Lee is said to be much better quality optically)

Yes, I have the first model with the series 6 filter size. Beautiful glass.

Do you know where I can get series 6 step up rings to use larger filters?

p.1 #6 · p.1 #6 · Leica Summicron R 2/50 Question

The bottom line is, I'd like to use an ND fader filter I have with this lens. The thread size of the filter is 77mm (I know, BIG) so I'm looking for a step up ring or a combination of step up rings to enable usage with this lens.

I've been advised to get a Series VI to Series VII ring, use that with Series VII to 55mm then another step up ring to reach 77mm. It seems to be the only way to connect the dots...

The problem is finding these particular rings. I can't find a Series VI ring anywhere!

Any advice?

Thanks

You might try Leica USA [don't have their number handy] ask for Dave Elwell in parts. Never know, they may have one.

I'm in Spain, I'd like to avoid calling long distance so I might drop them a message.

I've been pointed towards these guys:

http://www.srb-griturn.com/stepping-rings-361-c.asp

I gave them a quick call and they said they could custom make a 44mm to 77mm step up ring for £40 ($64). It's a bit steep considering these rings usually go for around £3 - £8. Can't believe these are so rare.

Thanks for those links but none of them have the 44mm thread. I might have to bite the bullet and pay for the custom job. I just need confirmation that the Series 6 thread size of this lens is in fact 44mm. Don't want to shell out the £40 to find out it doesn't fit.

do you have the twist on hood? would it be possible to attach a lee filter holder/cokin adapter to it? then you could use the graduated filter on it.

Yes I've seen them thanks but there's no Series 6 - upwards step up rings, nor 44mm - upwards.

Yes I have the original hood for it. That's interesting but isn't it specifically to be used with square individual filters. I'll be using this ND Fader:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/LCW-Fader-ND-ND2-ND400-77-mm-77mm-Neutral-Density-/250653693506?pt=Camera_Filters&hash=item3a5c1fd642#ht_2542wt_1141

Not sure if it's adaptable.
