p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Street Photography at Night

I recently picked up a copy of the Nikon 50mm f/1.2 AI-s, a venerable old manual focus lens that is very happy when mounted on my D700. I figured with the wonderful lowlight performance of that camera and a very fast lens I might enjoy playing at night, relying on street lights, window display lights, passing car lights. In fact, I've been having a great deal of fun and found myself wondering whether anyone else is out in the evening shooting street scenes. I'll drop a few photos on the board and invite others to join me. Tell us what gear you're using. My first shots have the wrong EXIF data since I forgot to change the setting. Old lenses without CPUs are entered into the camera, but getting the right EXIF data requires competence from the operator that was NOT present this evening. These were all shot with the Nikon 28mm f/2.8 AI-s, another manual focus lens, set at f/4. See anyone can do this! Of course, you need decent lowlight performance from your camera...

Here we go. These were taken Wednesday evening in downtown San Rafael, California, about ten minutes from where I live. Enjoy!

And here are a few taken in my hometown, San Anselmo. These were taken wide open with the 50 f/1.2 AI-s around nine o'clock at night. Enjoy!

I guess I have to play alone... Tonight I visited another neighboring town and took a few shots around 10 p.m. I was shooting with the Nikon 50 f/1.2 AI-s but not wide open. I shot at f/2, 1/80th of a second. I note that Auto ISO pushed the ISO to 6400 on all of these shots. The two interior shots were taken through the front window. You can make out reflections from the scene outside in the second image.

I thought this thread died with my initial posting, discovering today when I was looking for it that a few others have made contributions. Although the last posting is two and a half months old, I'll drop a few images on the board to see if it inspires anyone else. I'm doing very little of this kind of shooting of late, in part because I discovered extension tubes and have been using my collection of Nikon MF lenses with tubes and doing quasi macro work... looking closely at the world around us that doesn't include bugs. But this is about night shooting...

These were taken in Larkspur, California.

Great collection of shots Gregory. Sorry I wasn't paying attention. When no one showed up after my first two postings I half forgot about this thread until someone on the Nikon board considering changes in his kit mentioned he enjoyed shooting at night. I had to search out this thread and then discovered a few folks had dropped images on the board. Thanks for sharing these.

Tony - Looks like you're playing with Nikon's newest lens, the 35 f/1.4. Sweet!

You'll have to explain to me what a "partly" clinical psychologist is...

Here are a couple of shots I took while in the Netherlands in September. A friend from Rotterdam kept talking about photographing during the "blue hour" and I had no idea what she was talking about. Then one evening we joined another friend and after dinner rode to the top of the Euromast to take photos. NOW I understand...

Our friend Bert was shooting with a Panasonic G1.

These were shot with a 50 f/1.2 AI-s manual focus lens mounted on a D700 at f/2.

CGrindahl,

"partly" as in retired :0 Both pictures are with the 16-35vr f4. I'm pretty new taking pictures at night (i.e., I don't know what the heck I'm doing yet), but, gotta start some place. I thought I'd play around with high ISO last night. Even though I was able on some of my shots to stabilize my hands and camera on a railing, it's clear my next investment is going to be a tripod. Even with the VR, cold as it was last night (wind chills in high 20's), I was pretty much shaking

I'll go back to the same area with my 25-50 Ai next time to see how it compares with the 16-35.

Love the "blue" night. Beautiful!!

Shaun - You're the kind of shooter I hoped would be attracted to this thread. Your work is really fine, both here and on your website. No doubt NYC gives you some rather spectacular possibilities for shooting at night. I envy you that. My sleepy little community in sleepy Marin county doesn't offer a great many opportunities for this kind of shooting. No doubt if I headed into San Francisco I'd have more to work with. Your work might be just the inspiration I need to do so.

Perhaps you could shed some light on the gear you're using when shooting at night. I'd welcome that.

Tony - You're getting the hang of it. With the D700 set to Auto ISO you don't really have to worry about much beyond keeping your shutter speed high enough to compensate for possible camera shake. Since I shoot with manual focus lenses I'm able to shoot in only two modes, aperture priority and manual. For day time shooting I shoot aperture priority but for night time shooting I shoot manual. I generally shoot wide open though on occasion I'll stop down a bit. I'll set the shutter speed to slightly more than the focal length. For example, I often shoot with the 50f/1.2 AI-s at f/2 at 1/60th of a second. The Auto ISO takes care of the rest. Here's an early shot I took at f/1.2 and 1/100th of a second. Because of the light from the shop ISO was 1100.

Shaun,

stunning shots; deep and rich with quite extraordinary perspectives.

CGrindahl,

thanks for the advice I'll give it a roll when I go out again which, unfortunately, will be a bit delayed, given the Grade I ankle sprain I just did to myself a couple hours ago walking in with the groceries. ARGH. This aging thing sucks You and the others seem to have gotten it so that your pictures are not only rich but sharply defined, giving me some really good goals to work toward. Thanks to all

Tony

Tony - Sorry to hear about your ankle. I second the comment about aging... Amazing how unaware one is when young and everything just works. It is a shock when one finally accepts that some things that were easy before simply can't be attempted any longer. I've been amazingly healthy all my life, but now every bump becomes a bruise and my skin feels like tissue paper, tearing at the least insult. But I'm grateful for having made it thus far after watching much younger friends coming to the end of their lives... sobering.

Take care of yourself. You might want to pick up a set of extension tubes and take a closer look at your immediate environment. Things I've ignored for years suddenly become endlessly fascinating when I'm looking at them through a lens from two inches away. You'll find quite a few such shots on another thread I started on Manual Focus Nikon Glass. Scroll down to the last few pages for the extension tube shots.

Hi CG and thanks for checking out my other stuff ! I use a D3 since it came out, was w canon before that. Most used lens for me is the 14-24 then the 85 1.4 D in manhattan.16mm fisheye gets some time too..Rarely use 24-70 .The 14-24 is really special to me because it gives excellent IQ from wide open and I can shoot pretty slow when needed. I love headshots & details with the 85D. although it's not the new G it serves me well. Want the 35 1.4 badly, looks like a winner

Best
Shaun

Thanks Tony !

I'm not surprised that you're shooting Nikon full frame Shaun, knowing from first hand experience how sweet these cameras are in low light. It was the joy of shooting in low light with the D700 that motivated me to start this thread.

I've not shot with the 14-24 but I'm certainly aware of its reputation. When I came over from Canon early this year I experienced a bit of sticker shock when reviewing Nikon's latest lens offerings. I did, however, pick up the 85 f/1.4 D and share your enthusiasm for the lens. I'm still an unabashed fan of the EF 85 f/1.2L but the 85mm focal length is my favorite and the Nikon lens is definitely sweet when shooting portrait type images. I like the focal length so much I recently bought my third Nikon lens in this range, the old MF lens, an AI-s at f/2.

Thanks again for your images, they are really inspiring. I hope you drop a few more on this thread
