I am trying to figure out which 21mm f3.5 lens do and don't have MC

I have figured it out for a lot of them, but there is a small serial number range that is just confusing.

I know that greeninsh tint in MC (at least for 24 and 28mm)
I know that brownish tint is single coating

What about a purple tint?

I have no idea what a purple tint is and unfortunately that is the lens I am looking at

According to the sites that talk about 21mm lenses by serial number - One clearly states it should be MC, and a second sight indicates that it is probably single coated.

So does anyone know if a lens in the serial number range of 1205XX to 121XX is MC or single coat?

Or for those with a know MC coating is it really greenish or is it purple?

For those with a known single coating e.g. labled "G.Zuiko" - does the coating look brown tinted? Or could it be purple tinted?

Any light or tint you could shed on this would be greatly appreaciated

Bill

Mine is definitely MC and it has a purple/green tint. It's also within the range of serial numbers you mention. It is also my understanding that multiple colours do not necessarily indicate MC; SC lenses can reflect multiple colours too.

So if I see reflections of multiple colors in a lens, that doesn’t mean it’s multi-coated?

Not necessarily. A multi-coated lens may present multi-colored reflections, but so will many single coated lenses. The way to tell a multi-coated lens from a single one is to compare the brightness of the reflections rather than their color: the lens with brighter reflections will be the single coated one.

Great source! It explains why my single coated lens (zuiko 28/3.5 S/N 399184) renders such nice colours and soft contrast which suits fine for digital B&W. Still the photo's are very colourful which may be explained by the small design with limited number of elements.

As for your 21mm, perhaps it doesn't matter which coatings it has as long as you like the rendering.

(my 28mm has a purple coating by the way)

Even within the multicoatings, they changed more than once, so the color or intensity of the reflections is not really something to bank on. The easiest way to tell is compare with known MC and SC lenses (not even necessarily of the same focal length.) Once you are used to seeing it, it's fairly easy to tell by eye.

Usually any type of green indicates MC. Purple/yellow tend to be the single-coat reflection colors.

Here's my take on serial numbers for the ZUIKO 21/3.5 lens:

OLYMPUS OM-SYSTEM G.ZUIKO AUTO-W 1:3,5 f=21mm sn (chrome nose) single coated
(no M-SYSTEM lenses)
100146 lowest sn
107981 highest sn

OLYMPUS OM-SYSTEM G.ZUIKO AUTO-W 1:3,5 f=21mm sn (black nose) single coated
108181 lowest sn
116430 newest

OLYMPUS OM-SYSTEM ZUIKO MC AUTO-W 1:3,5 f=21mm sn (black nose) MC
114382 lowest sn (overlaps with G.ZUIKO range, but seems that there are two distinct MC batches within the late G.ZUIKO series)
118334 highest sn

Zuiko (black nose, multicoated, but not marked with MC)
OLYMPUS OM-SYSTEM ZUIKO AUTO-W 21mm 1:3,5 sn Japan
118444 lowest sn
1254xx highest sn; last production April 2003

Check out the soon to be released Voitlander SL2 20/3.5 which is almost guaranteed to be better than the OM 21/3.5 and it's smaller too.

That seems like wishful thinking (re: better).

The 21/3.5 is about as small as is practical already, too.

What IQ or functional differences are there between the SC and MC versions? One better than the other, or just different? (flare, contrast, etc.)

Mostly only an issue if you are shooting into the sun. Slightly less flare on the MC versions, generally.
