DISCUSSION THREADS

Out of respect to the authors of several threads dedicated to specific topics of discussion regarding the camera, I politely request that we continue the respective conversations in those channels.
This hub will hopefully curtail duplicate threads, while possibly giving folks here instant gratification.

The first two are probably the most relevant, at least pre-release:

TIPS

I will update this as WE go.

Tip #1 RAW/JPG
by @dj r

If you were previously shooting RAW to primary card and RAW backup to secondary, you may want to give this a try, especially if you are waiting for the LR update. shoot RAW to primary and JPEG to secondary.

To accomplish this:
- go to photo shooting menu
- primary slot selection XQD
- secondary slot selection RAW primary - JPEG secondary
- image quality, select RAW + JPG fine* or whatever version of jpg you want

confirm by looking at the lcd screen (top)
it should say RAW and FINE under it (or whatever you selected for jpg)

Important to note, I'll save you some reading:
JPG fine* vs. JPG fine (without *)
JPG fine* is the highest quality - use this as memory is cheap

Without LR support yet, so this is a no brainer. You can get the JPG's up to social right away without editing and they look incredible.

Tip #2 - WHITE BALANCE
by @dj r

The new Natural Light Auto (w/b) option is amazing!

- photo shooting menu
- white balance
- choose NLA

Now this will be your AUTO setup
But you still have options to use Auto 0,1,2 which are:
0 keep white, reduce warm colors
1 normal
2 keep warm lighting colors

So basically we have a lot of Auto options now

Tip #3 - SILENT SHOOTING / LIVE VIEW
video recap: https://youtu.be/B_CF1_OT5GQ

Tip #4 - AF SELECTION OPTIONS!!!
You can set up TWO buttons to run TWO unique AF types
shout out to Francesco Spighi (from Italy) for the inspiration to set it up this way

I run back button AF only.
Set the camera to run in AF-C, for e.g.: 3D tracking...
Then program the joystick button to run a different specific AF area mode, like AF-S (single point)!!!
There is more to it, you have other options as well, with program ability with the joystick and AF stuff.
The 5D4 has the ability to run this way, and I loved it when I demo'd that camera last year.
I am THRILLED to have this feature arrangement on the D850!

Cheers

You might want to add the D850 Menu Guide.

My D850 arrived this afternoon at 2pm.

First few shots in the office. First NEF raw via PS with the latest updates, the second shot is OOC Jpeg. The Jpeg is Auto picture mode(new), natural light WB(new) which I really like. I have a feeling I will be using a lot of Jpegs when I need a quick output. The Jpeg OOC are really good, very similar to Fuji OOC Jpegs.

The grip feels very sturdy and much better than the D810. The AF is fast, accurate and it can lock on focus quickly where you cannot see in low light. The touch menu system is just awesome. I never realized how much time you save by having the touch menu to adjust your settings.

Surprisingly there is little stock of XQD cards so I am using the UHS II SD card which is fine for now. I really like the logic of having both SD and XQD for this reason alone. My MacBook Pro running Windows has only SD slot as does a lot of my peripheral gear. I suspect there is little reason to opt for the XQD card unless you have more serious shoot where you need a back up and serious speed.

The LV functionality is a lot of fun LV just touch a spot, AF and release to shoot....easy. LV has focus peaking which makes MF a lot easier. My good friend who facilitated the D850 has tested the 50/1.2 with focus peaking and it worked really well according to him.

Thank you I still need to test a lot of boundaries, 64 ISO and very high ISO's.

Congrats Charles! Nice shot. I would be lying if I said that I'm not envious ... I am.

I hope that we will get some raw files to play with this weekend, that is really the only way to determine the noise characteristics at high ISO.

someone who has the camera, can you go into the menu and check the save/load function.
do you think if we save our d750 settings, onto a card, we can then load them to the d850?
or b/c different body, that won't work?
my d810 didn't have this function, but the d750 does. d5 probably too?
cheers

3 by Suteetat S, on Flickr

300/4e PF, iso 4500, 1/320, f4.5
I just imported NEF into PS and changed camera profile to D850 standard, resized and converted to jpg and did not do anything else. AWB was in A2. D850 has A0,A1,A2 for auto WB, for keep white, normal and keep warm however the manual does not say which A0-1-2 is which.
Love the live view now with focus peaking, it makes using manual lens especially on tripod for landscape really easy and the screen resolution is better and easier to focus than many other mirrorless systems.

I looked quickly through the menu but did not see it. Did not see it in the manual index either.

I've never been able to get that to work between different series of cameras. So, I don't think it'll work (that, and the menu / options of the D850 is very different than the D750).

Can't be done.
Just sit in front of the TV and work through it...

Two beautiful Australian birds... followed by an oversized pigeon...
With a beak poking in from the left...

Is there no forum etiquette?
Oh the horror...

Alright team, answer me this before my D850 gets here tomorrow: with the electronic shutter in live view, how well does it work? I love the feature on my XPro2, but on my GFX it was unusable if not on a tripod for stationary subjects (readout just too slow, which was understandable for that sensor size.)

Some more shots in the office this morning. This time the 58G with the D850 post processed from NEF raw via PS Portrait Profile. The second shot is OOC Jpeg WB Natural with a different exposure setting.

The AF was set at AF-C and AUTO with face recognition, which worked perfectly even off center.

I will caution those with unsharp 58G lenses whether it is calibration or copy do check you lens carefully as the D850 is very unforgiving. I replaced my 58G this morning as the previous copy could not AF fine tune correctly on the D850 and it appeared unsharp compared to the D750/D810 combo. With the new copy the 58G it is superb for the intent of capturing portraits. The lens renders perfectly now even with the high MP's of the D850.

How do you like the automatic fine tune?
