No, unlike almost every other lens release from Canon, there are no MTF charts for any of the new lenses published on the official USA pages.

It's on the Japanese page, seems like it's better than the 85 1.2 but I wouldn't expect it to be as good as the Sigma.

Question: Does the 85mm 1.4 have focus by wire? Or is it normal mechanical coupling?

This is a good question, and I don't think we know the answer to it yet.

It does appear to be full ring USM, at least, as Canon would likely label it if it were otherwise.

There is no mention of that yet but I very much doubt it's focus by wire.

If it's the regular ring USM found in most current L lenses, it will have a mechanical link between the focusing ring and the focusing group. I don't think Canon has used the old style fly by wire USM in a lens since the 85/1.2L refresh in 2006.

There are a few low-res samples on the Canon Japan 85/1.4L site: http://cweb.canon.jp/ef/info/ef85-f14-usm/impression.html#inline1

Edit: here's the Japanese translation about AF performance:

Adopted inner focus and ring USM (ultrasonic motor). Furthermore, with high-speed CPU and optimized AF algorithm, it realizes high speed and high precision AF and does not miss the shutter opportunity. A "full-time manual focus mechanism" which enables fine adjustment of focus by turning the focus ring after one shot AF is also carried.

Regarding the MTF: I think what's important to me here is that the lines track pretty straight/horizontally across the graph for most of the image width and tangential and sagittal divergence is minimal, which should translate to pretty good rendering. There is some divergence at the edges/corners, and looking at the sample images, there is some indication of swirling in that area. But should be reasonable.

While the lens doesn't seem to resolve as high as the Sigma, I don't think it needs to. At least not for my applications (mostly people pictures). I would rather have a lens that has some residual SA wide open and that sharpens up more a stop or two down. I find this offers some variety to the look of the lens, depending on aperture used (and not just the change in depth of field). But at least from the low-res samples on the Japanese site, sharpness and contrast seems to be very good wide open (but really need to see higher resolution). Also the one of the girl splashing in the water, seems to indicate low CA/purple fringing problems that occur in such images. But I’m sure once the lens is in the hands of reviewers and users, we’ll have a better understanding.

Lastly, Canon’s MTFs still are only wide open and f/8 values. I’d like to see them also show performance at the lens’s optimum aperture, which will likely be in the f/2.8-f/4 range.

For me at least, pleasing rendering (of course a subjective interpretation) is important, as is quick AF and the benefit of IS. I’m also glad size didn’t balloon to Sigma Art or Zeiss Otus proportions. There are probably some optical tradeoffs as a result, but so far it looks promising.

Thanks for the link. Looks good to me at that size. But I never used the 85L 1.2 so my opinion does not weigh much.

The 85 f1.2 looks better at f8 than the new lens so maybe when stopped down to f1.4 it would be similar (or better) to the f1.4IS.

PLEASE let the AF speed deliver on the 85 IS. Credit card ready and waiting.

The photog on the B&H "first look" video mentioned nothing about the new 85 having faster AF. Also, he advises speeding up the AF by using the distance scale to ball-park it ahead of time. That suggests that the AF is still slow.

I doubt it too, but the listings showing 'full-time manual focus' don't eliminate the possibility.

I'm very interested on the TS-E 135/4L Macro. It seems to be a very versatile and unique lens.

It's nice to see more brands following Tamron's lead and putting stabilization in the 85mm lenses, hopefully it becomes the norm.

'Zeiss' Batis?

Still, it's nice to see, though Canon may have an ulterior motive: hooking their stabilized primes up to their Cinema EOS cameras.

Hopefully Nikon picks up the trend as well, as they're going to have to start competing here too. If they can.

Nikon's prime lineup is actually phenomenal - they don't need to do anything more to compete there for the foreseeable future. They have a complete line of very modern 1.8 and 1.4 primes and I think the 135mm is the only one left they need to refresh. None of them have VR though, and I like VR in everything, including my UWA's - most people don't seem to care about it though in their sub-telephoto primes. Hopefully their next 85mm has it as well.

The MTF of the 85mm 1.4 IS look good, although not overly impressive. But this doesn't worry me, since the global rendering can be great all the same.

I rather wonder how well the lens can keep chormatic aberration low without any special glass. The combination of focal length 85mm and very wide f/number 1.4 (on full-format) has prooved to be quite critical in regard to chormatic aberration correction. The Sigma 85mm 1.4 Art has two UD lens elements and, while an exceptional performer in all, it does show its fair share of longitudinal chromatic aberration, at least wide open. And the Canon has no UD glass in it.
The published sample pictures can have been edited to an unknown measure, so it's impossible to make any assessment about chromatic aberration based on that material.

Well you can already see a bit of LOCA in the jewels in the wedding sample shot above, so I'm fairly certain that they haven't gone bonkers in trying to eliminate them, as they did with the 35LII.

I think if you look really closely at this image there is some indication of 'bokeh fringing' such as along the edge of her back there is a faint green outline. Or the wires of the bridge, again a hint of green along the edges away from the point of focus and possibly a bit of magenta in front.
