Regarding the MTF: I think what's important to me here is that the lines track pretty straight/horizontally across the graph for most of the image width and tangential and sagittal divergence is minimal, which should translate to pretty good rendering. There is some divergence at the edges/corners, and looking at the sample images, there is some indication of swirling in that area. But should be reasonable.
While the lens doesn't seem to resolve as high as the Sigma, I don't think it needs to. At least not for my applications (mostly people pictures). I would rather have a lens that has some residual SA wide open and that sharpens up more a stop or two down. I find this offers some variety to the look of the lens, depending on aperture used (and not just the change in depth of field). But at least from the low-res samples on the Japanese site, sharpness and contrast seems to be very good wide open (but really need to see higher resolution). Also the one of the girl splashing in the water, seems to indicate low CA/purple fringing problems that occur in such images. But I’m sure once the lens is in the hands of reviewers and users, we’ll have a better understanding.
Lastly, Canon’s MTFs still are only wide open and f/8 values. I’d like to see them also show performance at the lens’s optimum aperture, which will likely be in the f/2.8-f/4 range.
For me at least, pleasing rendering (of course a subjective interpretation) is important, as is quick AF and the benefit of IS. I’m also glad size didn’t balloon to Sigma Art or Zeiss Otus proportions. There are probably some optical tradeoffs as a result, but so far it looks promising.
