p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Fuji XT-2 + 100-400

I currently have the A9 with 100-400 G Master. I have the XT-2 for awhile and i'm itching to find out if the XT-2 + 100-400 can do what the new A9 does. I went out to shot some owl today and I'm happy to report that it can get the job done. For half the price $3500 vs $7000, it is a GREAT ALTERNATIVE.

This is what i find:

1. XT-2 has a hard time to keep up with erratic motion
2. XT-2 has a hard time to separate the busy background
3. XT-2 plus 100-400 is heavier than A9 + 100-400 G Master.
4. For some odd reason, it eat up battery faster than Sony. I'm using battery grip with boots mode.

So, here are some pictures of the XT-2 + 100-400

Really like these. While I most often see all the feathers in focus, I do really enjoy your choice to keep them out of focus and only the face of the owl is in focus.

Did you try messing with the different AF tracking options ? There is one that is supposed to be for more erratic motion, might make a bit of a difference depending on the nature of the subject

i did but not having better result. For example, i don't use tripod or mono-pod with both system. So with A9, when i see the movement of the bird, i raise up the A9 and point at the direction of the bird, no matter how busy the background, it will lock focus on the bird and when you pan, it will follow, you click on the shutter button, 20 frames out later all in focus. With XT2, it can't find the bird, once it find it, the bird already out of the zone.

Although I am very new to the X-T2 and 100-400 lens combo, my experience mirrors yours. It was hard for me to track a bird against a busy background, and I was very surprised at how quickly the battery ran low on charge - just using the camera w/o a grip. I usually carry a spare battery, but with this combo will carry two spare minimum.

Both batteries in the grip depleted within 2 hrs. Caused by boost mode?

I think yes, as even w/o the grip, my battery ran down quickly (within a few hours) while using boost mode. Was quite surprised to see it drain as fast as it did.

I wouldn't necessarily blame boost mode entirely. Could also be the nature of the outing (waiting long times for action while the EVF is going the whole time ECT). This is one area I think DSLR still has the big lead -- I once waited 1 hour for a particular bird shot, thankfully with a DSLR.

Yep, you make a good point.

I just got an xt2 and 100-400 (plus a couple other zooms). I am looking for suggested settings for wildlife shooting with the fuji combo. While I will continue to use my nikon gear as primary, my wife may carry the fuji with her and I'd like her to have the best setup possible. I know its not going to be as good as a d500, but as good as it can get is where I'd like to get the setup to. I really like the fuji gear so far. Lenses are really good quality imo.

AF-C, Zone. If the bird small or have similar color background, adjust your zone square to small. Otherwise, leave it as big as possible. Try different AF-C custom. #2, 4 work for me.

My experience with the XT-2 and the 100-400 mirrors the OP. I find it difficult to use tracking fast action, birds, etc. especially with a busy background. I have long loved Fuji, but this has soured me a bit. Don't want to spend A9 money, but I might have to.

A9+ 100-400 G Master is day vs night compare to the Fuji. Yes, 2x more but worth every single cents.

It better be for the price difference. In most cases you can get the Fuji combo for less than the cost of A9 alone.

2 months later, latest firmware updated but the result is the same as 2 months. Nothing much improve on AF tracking.

I have been experiencing the same issues as everyone else. I had a talk with some Fuji representatives this past weekend and they confirmed to me that the X-T2 isn't quite there yet for birds in flight specially with a busy background . They say there is a firmware update that is coming I believe by the end of this month that will address th
is problem. Apparently the focusing algorithm of the new X-E3 will be part of the new firmware. I certainly hope so. Until then I will be using my 1DX Mark II for any birds in flight.

I never had good BIF experience with the same combo so I'll be giving RX10 IV a try as it seems to get the job done for lot less money than A9

I just ordered an XF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 R this morning. I can't believe the AF could possibly be worse than what I was experiencing with the Sony cameras and their tele zoom lenses - just as I am certain it won't come anywhere close to what I had with the Nikon D500 and 200-500mm f5.6E (aside from the recalls...)
