p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · D7100 vs D810 vs D800 vs D750 resolution

Nikon 50G f/1.4 @ f/5.6, ISO 100. Subject distance is about 10 feet, 100% crops in this composite. Three shots taken using LV AF, best of three chosen for each camera. 3-second exposure delay, MUP+EFCS for D8100. Framing on the D7100 is a little rotated - did not correct in LR as they would reduce resolution in the transformation.

LR: All processed in LR 5 with defaults except profile set to camera neutral and WB set.
Capture NX-D: All defaults except profile set to Camera Neutral, WB set, NR disabled. NX-D conversions show less moiré vs LR even though I kept its moiré correction disabled (which is its default).

Lightroom 5.7.1 Conversion
Capture NX-D V1.0.2 Conversion

Edit 1: (added)
Capture NX-D V1.0.2 Conversion, D800/D810/D750 upsampled to D7100 resolution

What is with all the color artifacts? The D810 looks horrible. Is that just just my monitor or is this just a case of really bad color moire?

How did you make sure the camera was squre to the chart? Why is the D7100 file as large as the 36MP files and the D750 not?

@Hardcore, it's moire. The Capture NX-D shows much less
@Mark_L: I used the VF frame guides to square up. DOF is 4ft on FF at this distance (or down to 1ft if you use a very small CoC) so absolute precision on the squaring wasn't critical. The D7100 is larger because these are 100% crops' the D7100 has an effective pixel density of 54MP in FF terms.

Btw, justed added an upsampled version as well to make it easier to compare resolution between all four images.

Makes sense. It would have been nice to have seen the D7100 shot from further back to approximate the effective focal length, this would be a fairer comparison to the full frame cameras.

All I have figured out from the test is that Adam is KING of testing!!!

Good work my friend...

This test was meant to simulate focal-length limited scenarios. I agree, for scenarios where the FOV is the same a higher-MP FX body will outperform a lower-MP DX.

Thanks Don. One day I hope to be well-regarded for actual photography too

More important...what is all that gobbledygook? certainly looks like something the govt. spent a lot of our money on so they could justify their job.

Let me just say without even looking, all those cameras are going to take essentially the same image I don't mean to be too negative, people are welcome to start any thread they want, but cmon guys, does this stuff really matter? I read an article recently pitting a D40 against a D810 - I think that should be required reading for the sake of every photographer's pocketbook (not that there isn't a place for the D810s of the world).

Shooting the D7100 and the D800e at the same distance. The D7100 is sharper in good lighting.D800e has better dynamic range and Less noise at high ISO.My observations shooting both.Doug M

Thanks snapsy!

Now could you buy a D7200 and repeat?

ETA: Would you be willing to add your thoughts after a day or two, once we all have had a look?

Usually the person doing the tests is able to take in a lot more detail from the full frame files, look at it larger on a desktop monitor setup (I am on my laptop), spend more time with the whole process, etc. Thanks!

Arbitrage did that for some tests that he posted in the Canon forum and it was pretty useful.

My conclusion so far: I am glad that I don't have to work with those processes for the gov. I am sick of bureaucracy and engineering/ technical stuff. It makes my head hurt! I think I will go back to being a creative.

Plus the D750 doesn't resolve as well of course. At least at this magnification. Although that is a pretty big print size.

Cheers!
