Ok, did a tiny bit of morning testing on same scene as yesterday.

OM50/1.2, little to no reflections (EOS > NEX Fotodiox adapter)
Cron 50-R has reflections (same as earlier) (Nik G > NEX Fotodiox Pro adapter)
Minolta 35-70/3.5 showed even worse reflections at 50mm (Minolta > NEX cheapie)
Native lens, no reflections
OM21/3.5, no reflections but green halos on some bright highlights

So me thinks I have adapter issues, at least... The big question then is how much issue will it be out in the field, and how much of an issue is it for working with strobes. I would expect side lighting, umbrellas, etc. could be very problematic w/ adapted lenses.

Again, the sky is not falling, these are just my test results and are just here for info.

I had one green halo while shooting with the sun in the frame with my 90G and the Metabones adapter.

Find it funny that Canon 40/2.8 STM, such an awesome lens, costs just 200 bucks vis a vis Sony's 35/2.8...

I don't find that the canon 40/2.8 compares at all to the sony 35/2.8

The FE 35 is a more complicated design with 2 more aspherical elements, FWIW.

Don't know about that but just saw a review of Canon at photozone.de

I saw flaring with the A7 and FE 28-70 when I was taking pictures at Christmas. Image below is a crop of the bottom third of the original image. I had the flash to the left behind the camera and there was a window on the far left as well, but neither were able to directly shine into the lens. Christmas tree with lights on as well, so perhaps it's a worse case setup for this.

For the Contax G lenses, I will say that I have noticed with the Deotech adapter that I can easily induce flare with the G45 and G90 that I hadn't previously seen with the Kipon adapter I was using. I'll try the gaffer's tape trick to see if I can change it's behavior.

I also had reflection issues with G90, for most scenes it was OK, but on this and few others there were slight flare when closing down. In this series there seems to be some kind of magenta horizontal reflection at mid height of image and arch shaped milder reflection (white "colored"?) at bottom of image. :

I can't see anything in f/2.8 and f/4 images but f/5.6 there is some, and more in f/8 and clearly visible in f/11.

I tried to figure out what causes this, and my theory is that it's the original lens mount and maybe electronic connections

Yesterday's actions didn't stop the issue completely. Even covering whole adapter with non-reflective tape didn't help. Reflection is caused by something in camera. So I did same as Sony had done to their lenses, and this works!

5 minutes with black carton, scissors and one more bag of Sugru. Not nice looking, but who cares...

Hooray Samuli, thanks for testing that! I need to find some material to try it with. I had a feeling that might be the ultimate solution.

I just made one quickly from a yogurt carton lid covered with black self stick velcro. If I wasn't out of gaffers tape, this would have been even easier. I will definitely try it tomorrow when the light is guaranteed to set off my Minolta 35-70.

I am going to be a happy camper if this fixes the problems.

How would you describe light level at which manual focus using focus peeking and/or magnification becomes unusable with A7 or A7r?

Say, you have a f/1.4 normal 50mm-ish lens. What would be exposure parameters at the limit of manual focus usability (due to noise and refresh rate/motion blur)?

Like ten stops later than with an optical viewfinder. Peaking is always useless though.

I haven't found such a limit yet. ISO 12800, f/1.4 and 1/5 second = no probs.

Noise is the final factor, as with focus magnification strong enough to MF accurately or to check AF accuracy acceptably noise eventually makes this very hard.

The mirrorless Sonys are outstanding at this, I have used the RX1 at ISO 12800-f2-1/10s easily and expect to do the same with the a7r. I think it's better to actually know you have it right, even if other methods work OK. Sony apparently have a superior EVF in the wings for the next 'DSLR' they make.

I was out in the forest at night with only a full moon, shooting at ISO 25600 with a Zeiss 35/1.4 ZF.2, and I was having a great deal of difficulty focusing and holding the camera still. Another two stops of light and I think I would have been okay. Just guessing...

I did some flare/reflecion testing this afternoon with both a 5R and A7 with both the G90 and OM 135/2.8 non-MC. Overall I found the behavior of these lenses to be quite similar on both cameras. The G90 behaved fairly well, I didn't notice any relections, but flare was the worst when the lightsource was just out of the frame, directed at the camera. Flare was more of a problem on both cameras with the OM 135, with this lens the worst flare was with the light source in the frame. Again, I noticed no relections.

What I did notice is that the A7 is more sensitive to the internal adapter surface. On the G90, I used matte electrical tape to bridge between the lens felt and the adapter, thereby covering the electrical contacts on the G90. When I did this the flaring became WORSE! Aparently the groved surface on my cheap adapter works quite well. Interestingly, the change was not nearly as apparent on the NEX 5R.

On my way to dinner, will post pics later if I have time.

Ok. Thank you. I just wondered about it. My old Nikon D90 is not great in live view at low light, but new Nikons are not great either:

Very cool. I wonder if this is precisely the reason why Sony does this on their lenses. If it indeed fixes the problem, I will be happy.

Black Velcro and Velour are too thick and the fibers are too loose.
I have tried all solutions and the best is Adhesive Back Flock Paper.

Cool, thanks Fred. I think the Cron 50-R is just haunted. Or maybe it's my house. I'm Baffled.

I'm not getting little white ghosts anymore, now it's owls in the corners. Does anyone other than me see this?!

I see dead people.

Kind of fun outdoors though.
