p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Canon 5D Mk3 And Pentax Lenses (UPDATE: Macro Samples Added 07/25)

I recently procured three MF lenses for my 5D Mk3, to start my foray into manual lenses (primarily for video)

1) SMC Pentax 50mm f/1.4 Pentax K Mount (purchased on the B&S forum for $75)
2) Super Takumar 50mm f/1.4 8-element M42 Mount
3) Yashinon 60mm f/2,8 Macro M42 Mount (purchased 2 and 3 from an old gentleman through Craigslist for $150, along with a bunch of filters thrown in)

I got the following two adapters for these lenses from Amazon:

Fotodiox 10LA-M42-EOS-P-V2 Pro Chrome (Type 2) Lens Mount Adapter, M42 Lens (42MM x 1 Thread Screw ) Lens to Canon EOS cameras Fits Canon EOS (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003Y2Z6X2/ref=oh_details_o00_s01_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

Pentax PK Lens to Canon EOS EF Mount Adapter (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005JV06QI/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

The SMC on the K Mount throws an Err 20 when the camera is turned on. To handle this, I put the camera in Live View, and then mount the lens. Works great for both stills and video. I also have to unmount the lens when in LV mode, else the camera throws an Err 20.

Samples using the SMC (both wide open):

The Super-Tak is amazing. The M42 adapter goes on easy and there are no Err 20s or anything like that. The only issue is with infinity focus where the Err 20 pops up.

More to come later for the macro and the videos.

All in all, great little lenses. Once I get more comfortable, I will be ditching the Canon 50mm f/1.4 I currently have.

Mostly because I want to give Mf'ing a turn again, since I learnt how to shoot using completely manual cameras. 50mm is the focal length I want to explore more with. If I get my old levels of comfort with MF back, I plan to ditch the Canon 50mm.

2 things,
I am big MF guy.. So dont take me AF fan boy or Canon guy (Have Canon cameras from last 10yrs, but no AF lens).. I learned with AF lenses, moved to MF... though learned with film, but moved to digital...
2nd, you mentioned about video. With full frame camera and f1.4, it might be almost impossible to keep subjects in focus. Plus exposure compensation with Canon bodies. Evenrytime I change bodies, it takes me around a month to find actual compensation need wrt aperture...

BTW, I am big fan of super tak.. little gem...
interested in getting views about Yashinon...

About video, while I love to make us of the shallow DOF using these lenses, I will not be shooting wide-open. I tested the Super-Tak for a video today and was shooting at f/4.0. Even then, it was a little tough to keep everything I wanted in focus. I have been using the Canon 50mm f/1.4 and was not satisfied with the MF'ing in that lens for video. I thought of giving these lenses a shot to see how they will work out (considering I got them for a reasonable price). If they don't, I will have to explore other options.

I am amazed with how small and light the Pentax lenses are. I have a Canon FD 50mm f/1.4 and that is big and heavy compared to these. Regarding the macro, I took a few shots at 1:1, and immediately realized that hand-holding is not recommended, when the light is not optimal. I will take them out sometime this week and test it out in brighter conditions. My initial read of the macro is "Wow"!, but I am yet to really explore using the full capabilities of the lens. I will keep updating this thread as I experiment.

Updating the thread with some samples from the Yashinon 60mm Macro. I had to use a pretty high ISO (1600 or 3200) since the day was overcast and I primarily tried out the 1:1 setting. Aperture was anywhere from f/8 to f/11. Please note that I am a real newbie with macro photography, so cut me some slack

My observations about the macro lens:

1) It's really difficult to focus using Live View and 5X or 10X magnification, if you are holding the camera by hand.
2) Shutter speed needs to be really high (about 1/200 or so) for good pictures
3) Aperture needs to be high (f/8 or higher) for reasonable focus and depth of field
4) The lens is amazing in color and bokeh
5) In-camera, I had to under-expose by a stop compared to the camera's metering
6) I had to desaturate all my images in post processing by -4 to -6 (PSCS5 settings)

Macro samples from one of the parks close to home:

One more for the Super-Tak:

C&C appreciated.

not a criticism, but just a tip.

invest in a macro flash. ring or if you don't like that look a twin flash setup.

also my personal preference for macro is focus stacking rather than very small apertures, but that requires some things to be true that aren't always.

I like the third one quite a bit.

Thanks for the tip. I know I have to make further investments, most likely a ring flash being the first. However I will have to convince the Home Authority that such expenditure is justified, by showing some results. I can tell you that the Home Authority is pleased with my initial attempts.

I have learnt about focus stacking, and intend to implement that too. However, the search of a stable platform which can be lowered to the level of the flowers/critters is on. I have a Slik CF tripod and a Manfrotto ball head which can do the job, but I have to practice the skills, followed by the necessary post-processing work flow adjustments.

Thanks again for your comments.

Sorry to pull this thread back up again, but I'm wondering how those adapters have performed and if you have any issues with them? Any preference between the M42 and the K mount?

With the Big IS adaptor and my Super Tak I'm getting perfect focus confirmation from center point on my 5D3 wide open. I needed to buy a 50L to match it's performance wide open but gain AF, over 1000 bucks to match the output of an $80 lens.
