I needed to take some informal portraits of my daughters so I pulled out my 1 day old 70-200/4 AFS. Used it on my D800 wide open, hand held, with a mix of natural, CF, and flash lighting - not optimal I know, but it's all I had to work with.
VR was on and I used it at a few focal lengths from 200mm to 100mm.
All I can say is that I'm very very impressed. It seems that near the minimum focusing distance (MFD) 200mm f/4 gets just a tad soft (OR VR becomes less effective, I have not figured out which yet). But at 130mm or 100mm it's incredibly sharp wide open at 1.5 meters or so.
Here's an example - first a ~50% crop form the original, then 100% of her eye where I was focusing. Minimal sharpening (level 2 in CNX2).
Can't ask for better than that in my book!
