Thanx dB.......400 f/2.8 IS MkII + 2xTC MkIII can do a bit better re IQ, and it will AF quite a bit faster than this combo. In addition, the OoF blur and bokeh will be deeper and more diffused, for a noticeably more pleasing overall effect .

Take a look at the pic. #1 as an example. The water ripples are breaking the yellow reflection, and I am not too keen on that. If the same scene was shot with 400 II + 2xTC MkIII, that background would have probably become a smooth and uniform coloured yellowish blur.

More reinforcement for my decision to purchase the 400+2X. Thanks.

I see. 800mm vs 600mm in focal length at the same aperture and subject distance equals less depth of field so better bokeh. Any there differences in the diaphragms that you may be alluding to?

Db, I am not sure about diaphragm shape of those lenses, but that doesn't come into play as often in my photography. I was referring to the DoF difference due to the FL increase from 600m to 800mm at comparable aperture values.

Very nice and sharp and pretty, Alan. Did you use f/8 to gain IQ at the expense of background Bokeh?

Between f/5.6 and f/8 there is some difference in bokeh, but it's not huge. I could use Photoshop to blur the background more...didn't think of it. Usually when I'm shooting small birds from a close distance, I'll up the f-stop a bit to make sure I get whole front of the bird in focus.

Thanks for the reply,

Alan

You have a good eye, Db ......however, what's fatiguing is standing there with a relatively heavy lens/camera on the ready, waiting for the right turn of bird's head and /or a good beam of sunlight.

Handheld 1DsMkII + 500 f/4 MkII taken this week before I had realised that the 500 gave me too much of a "reach", so now I've switched to 300 f/2.8 and use 2xTC on it only when I really need to, which is not that often.

Good Morning,

Up and out early this morning before the rains come into the area, and probably strip the remaining leaves down. It's been a decent color shift here in northeast CT, but the temps at night have not been low enough to cause the really strong color changes in the leaves we have seen in the past...

The 5D with 24-105L at sunrise, and 5D MkII with 70-200 MkII L in the woodlands.

Regards,

Edd
