I purchased the JCC lens hood for both my Canon 50mm prime lens and my Canon 75-300mm, and am happy with them. The only OEM lens hood I have is for the 18-55mm kit lens. Big difference is the price of course, but I didn't want to buy something cheap just because it's cheap (if you get my meaning).
While the other hoods are plastic, this one is metal and feels very solid. Someone commented that it might be brass, and I think he may be right. It screws on nice and easy, and while I try to be careful with the equipment I have, accidents do happen and I feel better having the added protection of both a filter and a hood. Not that it's expensive, but I've come to enjoy using this little lens and want to take care of it and that was the main reason I bought this combo based on some of the reviews presented

The GOOD:
- it puts a layer of protection between your lens and things you might bump or brush up against. I don't worry all that much about recapping my camera when I'm wearing it over my shoulder. It puts enough distance in between that I don't worry about the lens getting dirty or dinged.
- it provides a substantial amount of glare reduction by narrowing and lengthening the flange of the lens, without causing vignetting.
- metal built feels substantial enough that I'm not worrying about it warping over time and getting hard to mount and remove. Not sure about how well the painted surface will hold up, but it's cheap enough to replace.
The BAD:
- it doesn't shield your lens from dust, and does little good for protection against the elements.
The OVERALL:
- It can't replace a glass filter, but it's a good, low-profile, open-glass alternative for those that don't care to mar the profile of the 40mm STM lens.
Instead, I recommend a B+W UV filter. The purpose is to protect the lens. A filter can do that much better than a hood for a pancake lens.
