p.1 #1 · Recent Cheer events

I have been busy lately with not only my daughter's cheerleading, but had a few events to cover. I'm still learning, not on par with the forum pros yet, so feel free to give some C&C on these shots.
Spent this past weekend in Atlanta for Cheersport. I loved the lighting there, but it also made it hard to catch the tosses at their peaks without problems. (how do you do that on the fly properly...anyone?) Below will be one of my examples, looks fuzzy or hazy because of the bright lights. Not all of these are from Cheersport as you will notice, but some of my recent shots taken, some are my daughter, others are from her teams, and one random. All shot in AV with 1DMKIII.

1. Toss with the bright lights nearby... ISO 1600, 1/1250, f/2.8, 70-200 f/2.8 IS USM with IS turned OFF.

2. My daughter.. ISO 1600, 1/800, f/2.8, 70-200 with IS turned OFF.

3. Another team from my daughter's gym.... ISO 1600, 1/1250, f/2.8.. same lens

4. My daughter again... from Jamfest in Indy this year. NO CHEER FACE!!! ISO 1600, 1/500, f/2.8

5. another teammate. I know the color is off in this one... ISO 1600, 1/1600, f/2.8

6. Last one, shot this at a local show (Rochester GLCC Up State Championship) ISO 6400, 1/250, f/2 shot with a 100mm f/2 USM. Lighting here was BAD!

Nice shots. Looks like you were also in Atlanta this past weekend. I have over 1600 Images to go through this week. Talking with a couple of the guys shooting the event the lights were playing havoc with them also. You need to start shooting in Manual instead of AV. I take it you were using a 70-200? If so I shot at 1/500 iso 1250 and I think I had mine set of Tungsten for light. I was shooting with a 70-200 on a 7D.

Also I don't know if shot straight on but most of the guys shooting center seemed to have the same problem that you were. I shot the first day from the left side of the stage and from the right on the 2nd day to catch as may competitors as possible.

Here is a crop from one of mine. No P&P done just cropped.

I don't have 1600 to go thru, but about 900-1000. We only had 5 teams there. I shot AV just seeing how it would do and never switched back to manual. I usually do shoot in manual, but when its my daughters teams and I am not actually working, I try different things. My wife doesn't like it when I do that. I don't like shooting straight on (unless I have 3 shooters), I usually go to the left side so I can get faces of the flyers. I did not want to sit right next to the UEP shooters, so I just went to the center. Yes, I was using a 70-200 2.8, I set my WB with a Phoxle SpectraSnap disc. I am not exactly happy with it.

Nice to see other pics from the event so I can see what I did wrong. Also, I told the coaches if they want some good pics of their hands, I have some of those also..(coaches jumping up and down in front after the girls nailed a specific item in the routine...).

Gymstar,

yeah I had similar issues with coaches jumping in the way. I had to have a talk with our coaches about staying in the areas that were not in the way of the UEP shooters or myself. Not every stage had two shooters so I was able to shoot around them. Attached is a link to all of my photos. I typically upload everything and then parents contact me for specific crops or whole DVD's of the comps. Since I shoot for our Gym I typically get media credentials so I can follow our teams for shots. It also lets me escort or mascot as he gets mauled by people if we don't have an escort with him lol.

I am also having to experiment with WB. It really depends on the cycling lights. It was funny as one of the shooters had his cyber sync still in the shoe and I had to ask him if they were really strobing. He said that his is so used to it being there if feels weird not having something in the shoe.

I wonder how Cheer Sports would feel knowing your selling photos of their competition without their permission?

luketrot, I don't think it was meant as a reminder, but I will thank you anyway. I have my default settings to include the printable option. I looked after your post and changed them. *I didn't sell any pics from this event. The local parents don't buy from me.... although my wife still put some money into UEP's pocket from Cheersport.

Still like the C&C for all aspects.

I don't shoot for our gym specifically, but I figure I have to shoot around the coaches when I am not the contract photog. I recently shot for an event that partners with the Jam Brands and the organizer specifically told me that I was secondary to everything else going on. It was all about the teams and parents, so if I could not get a good location to shoot from, sorry... which I understand. Some of the coaches must have a 12 foot arm span and can jump at least 10 feet high!

Yeah Jam is like that. Typically they do not have photog's at their smaller events such as Live in DC. They allow video, camera's you name it. Also the event is free to get into. As such my daughters usually buy tshirts so Jam makes up for it in the end I think.

Luke I don't know if that was directed toward me or not but parents can download the high res pics free of charge and they also typically provide me a DVD or CD to load the images on. They have the option to print from the site if they want but I do not block right click save or anything else for that matter.

Lighting is not BAD at all. You could probably get by with a lower shutter. Some look hot. Looks like the lighting on stage wasn't even though. Lens flare on the flyers is typical. No way to get around it other than to be involved in the light setup in the beginning.

No matter how good the lighting crew is your going to find hot spots, dark spots and have lens flair when shooting fliers. It usually takes a few routines to learn the dark/bright spots. I typically shoot M and adjust my shutter to compensate for the amount of light. Try to position yourself so do not have the rear lights aimed directly at your lens.

I think it was really hard at this event. I noticed that even the photog's were having exposure issues. Looking at the viewing stations there were numerous over exposed shots. I shot in tungsten which seemed to help out some. I give props to you guys that shoot full time. It is a learning experience every time I go into a new gym or convention center. I really want to start carrying a netbook or something with a bigger screen to look at test shots on a bigger screen.
