p.1 #1 · Is the Canon xxD line finished?

With the 550D specs so close to that of the 7D, is the xxD series doomed? If your answer is no, tell us what would differentiate the 60D.

The new Drebel has some extra video features and the new metering system but it's still far from the 7D in terms of AF, viewfinder, fps, etc. There's plenty of room for an affordable 60D that combines the best of the 50D and 550D without stepping too much on the toes of the 7D.

I'm still convinced that Canon has decided to add another segment to its line up

1Ds/1D pro
xD/7D pro-sumer high end (new segment)
5D/XXD pro-sumer
XXXD consumer
XXXXD entry level

I'm not convinced of that. I think the 3D will remain a myth. The next 5D will build on the successes of the 7D (focus and metering). I wouldn't be all that surprised with a 60D, but I just can't see the space for it.

Just because they run out of numbers doesn't mean they'll quit.

You haven't even started tacking on "Mk II"s or "N"s yet.

The burst speed and AF are probably the only two things that will differentiate the x0D line from the Rebel, discounting the camera build. Maybe 12 point AF with 6FPS burst, priced halfway between the Rebel and 7D.

There's alot of room still for an xxD model line. Car manufacturers don't produce three models (economy, mid-class, & luxury) and call it quits and Casio manufactures over 300 wrist watches...the point is there is room for 4, 5, even 6 concurrent DSLR models with different ergonomics, features, & pricing.

That's my two-cents,
Omar

There is no need for xxD any more. Putting anything between 550D and 7D does not make much sense.

So if I don't have a budget for 7D, I should settle for smaller RAW buffer, worse AF, smaller and worse shaped body (damn me, I have large fingers), way slower response time/wf blackout, way slower frame rate, worse ergonomics (the rear wheel IS useful and fast)?

I hope they dont do away with the x0D line and replace it with the xx0D line purely based on the size of the bodies! However there is a need for higher fps without the better AF of the 7D.

How in the world would a T2i compete with Nikon's Dxx line?

Outside of the bigger body, I don't know that there is too much room between the 550D and the 7D for features. 1 or 2 more fps? A couple of more cross type af points (but not too many?)

That alone is enough to justify another model.

I was just going to write that, the ergonomics are so different that you don't actually need more to separate them.

Oh, nobody mentioned battery life?
Four hundred and something for the new rebel isn't exactly overwhelming.

Omar, I agree fully.

Ergonomics alone is an important factor to have a XXD en XXXD line up, add a couple of extra features and you have real choice.

I'll stick with my expected line up for the time being, including the FF with 7D features next to the 1Ds- and 5Dx-series.

The same thing that differentiated the 50D from the rebel of the same era: build, thumbwheel and other controls (aka ergonomics), higher frame rate, speed, size, etc.

They are all just numbers. It's meaningless, really.

+1. I want faster shooting and better interface/usability than Rebel/xxxD provides, but I can't afford a 7D. Also don't want the weight of a 7D. Don't really want 18mp on a crop sensor either, not so much because of noise but the loss of available apertures. When f8 starts to get soft from diffraction (as I noticed even with the 50d at 15mp), that doesn't leave much flexibility if you're shooting f4 zooms. But looks like I won't have a choice in that since Canon seems committed to jacking the pixels. Hope my 40D lasts awhile.....

Sorry for the OT, but you do not lose available apertures on a higher resolution body. Your lenses still have them and there is nothing preventing you from using them. Assuming equal settings, at a given enlargement/print size the results at f/8 from a 7D are at least equal to f/8 from a 40D.

The amount of diffraction present at any given f-stop is the same between bodies with the same sensor size. While you may be able to notice diffraction effects a bit earlier with a higher resolution body when pixel peeping, the resulting print output will be the same or better than before.

+1

Burst speed
Better autofocus system
Pentaprism instead of mirror with better magnification
Bigger, stronger, better built body with hopefully better weathersealing

Not sure what else...

Spec-wise, that 550 surprised the heck out of me!

Canon T2i body: $799
Canon 7D body: $1699

Of course there's room for a 60D. They will not leave that huge pricing gap alone. If you think that's "crowding" go look at what Sony offers for under $1000.

I'm disappointed about the lack of an xxD body though. I do hope they are going to differentiate it by going the K7 route in terms of smaller and more compact. I don't like the rumors of an articulating LCD...
