p.1 #1 · The Subway - ZNP - Winter

We woke up at 5am NV time to head over to Zion to get there by eight o'clock UT time so we were guaranteed a permit to the Subway. Turns out we were the only ones who WANTED a ticket this time of year - sweet! It was great, and perfect with us being the only ones there. Foot and a half of snow in some places, but my boots held up great. Wonderful experience and I will do it again soon. Here are some of the shots I came up with.

1. The actual subway. The sand in those holes are spectacular.

2. My favorite shot. Who would have thought? This wasn't even in the actual subway.

Just gorgeous all are simply stunning how was the trail going down that initial descend this time of year? Did you post #2 on Deviant Art a image yesterday was an exact take of #2, very nicely seen on all of these

Thanks Ray! Sadly I did not go from the top down, I went from the bottom up then back down, it was still great but I'd love to go back during the summer.

And yes that was my photo on DA! hahah

Take care

Great set Mike. Really like #s 3 and 4, with 4 being my favorite of the set. I might be tempted to burn in the highlights on 1 and 4. Also, try a widescreen crop on #4 (16:9),; I think it would make a pretty cool pano shot.

Mike, I'm sure that Ray was referring to the descent down into the canyon on the "bottom-up" route. I've been there a couple of times and if it were covered by snow and ice (or muddy), I can imagine it being very hazardous.

Hey Mike, I really like #3 here. That is a sweet shot. I want to like #1 and 4... I like that taste of icicles in the shot, but both shots feel cutoff at the top to me.

OH! I gotcha. We went so early that the mud was very hard and there was no snow whatsoever on that first descent. The only hard parts were nearest the subway when there was a lot of snow.

Those are the boots, they are superb! I probably should have brought some gators along, but it wasn't that bad.

These are great Mike. My picks are the last 2 though it’s a tough choice.

Being out in nature on your own like you were is great and a much better way to experience it than when it’s crowded.

Hey Michael,

Actually in #1, you did capture enough of the ice/snow at the top. But It's being blown out that really keeps drawing the eye there. It's overexposer is in such contrast to the rest of the shot being perfectly exposed. As to what I would do, that's not an easy answer. Well, the answer is easy.... but whether it would work would be the trick here. I would underexpose that area and blend it in. But trying to balance keeping it white but not having it blown out will be tough. As you underexpose that area more it can have a tendency to turn gray. Did you bracket in that area and specifically expose for the ice and that brightness at the top?

How was the hike into it? Did the snow/ice cause any issues?

You know, I did for most other shots, just not this one. I did do AEB through the whole thing but the contrast between the exposed area's in #1 and the ice were so great that I would have had to change it dramatically (which I SHOULD have done), but I'll work on it later, thanks for the tips!
