p.1 #1 · Playing with flash

This was taken in broad daylight with my D700, 70-200 vr 2.8 and my SB-800 with no masking in PP.

Comments and suggestions welcome.

Cheers, joe

Excellent.
Could you share some tips on your flash settings:
specifically did you set the zoom on the flash to match your focal length, and how
much under exposed did you set the flash (-1 EV or similar?).
Thanks, and great results.

Joe,

You have wonderful sharp photos with subtle flash exposure that filled the shadows while letting the natural highlights come out. This is the way it’s supposed to be done. I looked at your exif data and could not read the flash setting. I’m suspecting you used the wonderful TTL-BL of the Nikon CLS. If you did this the old way dialing in flash compensation or using manual flash my complements to you as the results are spot on.

The black backgrounds create very dramatic images. Some would prefer to see the background come through. For me this is fine.

Beautiful work, only thing I would suggest is to clone out the catch light in #1 and #3

Thanks for the comments.

It really is not that hard.... If the lighting is consistent I will shoot in AP and under expose the camera and manually add a ton of flash with my SB-800... I set the camera to FP mode (high sync flash) and use exposure compensation to underexpose the camera and use flash compensation to like +3 with a diffuser, and sometime snooted.

It does not take that long to get the hang of it and you know where you need to be before you ever look at your first histogram.

Here are a few more example that I took in my backyard with wild iguana's

Cheers and thank again.

It's a pleasure to see flash so expertly used - a photographer's skill - vs ultra-high ISO - machine skill.

My compliments. Excellent work.
