p.1 #1 · Mademoiselle 1

Occasionally I meet a creature that opens up to me. One I can track for a while as it crosses varied terrain. As I was walking through and around one of my favourite haunts recently I happened to look up and there, about two feet above me at the edge of a leaf, was this magnificent creature looking down - I reckon.

This one, Mademoiselle means My Little Lady, to give this creature the status she deserves, moved slow enough for me to get some decent shots. About twenty will be posted in two threads. I trust it isn't too many and you enjoy the series as I do.

More or less as they came from the cam, of these nine only the first is out of sequence, it seems an appropriate lead shot. A little trim cropping, brightness and colour adjust, about 20 seconds each shot.

Very beautiful creature and a wonderful interaction.
Very lucky man.
A bit big for a weevil isn't it. . .
Bruce

BTW, if I look up into the trees around here, I'm likely to get hit over the head by a pine-cone or 'drunk' Koala. . .
No such luck with the beautiful bugs down here!

Thanks Bruce. Too big? This is from a remnant of the rainforest that used to be this part of Brisbane. I suspect, deep in the primeval rainforest, a Weevil can get as big as a man's hand, who knows? I found another soon after the one above only it is some turquoise on black with spots of yellow, red etc 'feathers'. Hmmm! There are advantages to the tropics though.

Wherever you are there are hot spots to be found, places where bugs come and go more than they do at other places. Night time works too. It could be the farm next door, I hear you get some great flies at dairy farm milking sheds down in Gippsland. Or plant nurseries, insecticide free I suppose. Not found anything yet?

Edit : start an organic compost heap?

Hey Mark,
I hope that you are going to post some pics of the 'other' weevil?
Funny that you should mention the compost thing. . . I'm just starting to put some new shrubs, etc., into my backyard and I'm thinking about adding a compost bin/heap. I will have to read up on how to do it properly so that I'm not just making a mess. . . . hehehe.
BTW, what rig did you use for your pics?
Are you still using the P&S?

Thanks Laurie, Zichar, Rocco and John. Much appreciated.

Zichar, at this time of year you will find such creatures along any of the natural hinterland drainage systems that haven't been built over, creeks and the surrounding nature. In my case it's from Venman NP to Victoria Point that then turns into a coastal mangrove forest, there are various (more) likely and accessible spots along the way.
