p.1 #1 · Best mount(s) for alt use on FF Canon

Hi,
I almost exclusively have used OM lenses on adapter with FF Canon. I also still
like to use my OM4T. Seems one lens I've been looking for a several months is
quite rare in OM mount but I have seen more in Pentax K, M42 and Nikon.
The OM mount ones seem to work very nicely on an adapter. Any particular
advantage in one mount over another on an adapter? I don't have a clue, but know where to ask.
Thanks for any help,
Mike

Some adapt easier than others, e.g. in the case of some Pentax lenses you have to remove or hack off the aperture lever for it to work with the adapter on a Canon body.

Out of curiosity, which OM lens?

OM, Nikon F and Contax/Yashica mounts have the least problems. M42 comes in a bit behind them (more likely to have mirror clearance issues on M42 wides). Leica R has limited wide compatibility. Most other mounts require lens conversions for EOS.

OM is the only mount with zero clearance issues.

It really does depend a lot on the lens in question. I assume it is a third-party lens?

Oh, it is the CV 180. If the 90 in OM mount were available, I'd probably
get that too. The Zuiko 85 f2 is very nice but the bokeh can get edgy easily
with a complex background.

I would suspect the Nikon F and M42 versions to be easily adaptable to EF. If it were me and I had the choice, I'd go for M42, simply because the adapters are more substantial. Nikon-EOS adapters can be finicky and flimsy, unless you spend the big bucks on a good one.

Ha,
Not sure I qualify as don't have the nifty 250 f2, but I do have a Mamiya to OM
adapter---use on the Mirex to mount the Zuiko macro lenses. It works well.

I fear the only way to get any CV SL lens in OM mount is a time machine and order them from Stephen Gandy at Cameraquest. I'll shy away from the K mount
as no one commented on this option in a favorable fashion.
Appreciate the comments.

Thanks for the link. I do often miss opportunities due to long work hours, but spotted this guy.
Heliar lenses have a long interesting history--known for nice bokeh, high resolution, low microcontrast:

This one has some CA issues but still a very cool lens.

I am totally smitten with the CV 180 f4. It just would fit in my travel bag and is about as large as some medium tele zooms lens hoods.

Most modern PK mount lenses, especially third party, make removing the aperture lever easy and reversible.

Mamiya to Canon via Mirex TS adapter also works well.

Happy shooting,

Thanks,
So far only have the Mamiya 55. I use it on the Mirex too which has an OM mount for the camera side then use a OM to EF adapter for FF Canon. Have mostly used it on OM, but the learning curve may be faster on digital. Tend to overdue the tilt and sometimes still miss near focus. I printed out Jim's list of favorite Mamiya lenses to use with the Mirex.
So far the Zuiko macro lenses on the Mirex work well. They are bellow lenses with large image circles to start and were designed to go on a T-S bellows that never came to market.

Well, it does not really matter what you use as long as you are enjoying what you do.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

FYI: Stephen Gandy has the Cosina Voigtlander 180/4 APO-Lanthar ($799) and the 90/3.5 SL APO-Lanthar ($499) in K-Mount in stock.

Look here http://www.cameraquest.com/inventor.htm at the bottom of the page.
